From Sonic the Hedgehog (master system/game gear).
Decided to make this one straight after the Yoshi's Island one i posted earlier today, as it was in my head! XD
A simple enough song, but i made it more difficult by making it in the wrong time signature. Still, i was happy enough with the final result so i'm glad i finished it.
Two songs in one day? Not bad considering my brain has turned to mush over the last few days...

Take the "Tortoise and the Hare" approach: Slow and steady. Don't rush yourself, even in the spiked area underwater. Always take advantage of bubbles, that the fact that you can scroll bubbles further up the screen. ALWAYS get the shield, and try to keep it AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! Above all else, as always, Rings are your friend. Jumping straight up is highly recommended, especially for where the spikes are both above and below you: Sonic has a good enough jump to clear the spikes at their highest. This will also help you slow down the pace.
Keep your nerves steady on all three Acts. It's quite easy to get over 100 Rings on each Act, so try to get as many as possible to give yourself more chances at the levels, and remember: The next Zone is MUCH easier. I always found the Starlight Zone to be a relaxing change of pace from the pressure-packed Labyrinth. Another idea is to prepare for this Zone by stocking up on Lives in Spring Garden, which is also quite easy, and will help you slow down the pace, as Spring Garden also has areas where concentration is key.
Playing Sonic 2 before taking on the Labyrinth is not a good idea, as aside from Aquatic Ruin and Casino Night (which are back-to-back), Sonic 2 is a game where you can knife right through most of the levels.
On the other hand, taking on the Labyrinth before playing Sonic 2 is a great idea, as the two Zones right after Casino Night require jumping straight up, a technique easily perfected in the Labyrinth, especially at the beginning of Hill Top Act 2 (the upper route is MUCH easier!)

Wow, you seem to have your Sonic gameplay down to a fine art!
As you mentioned Spring Yard Zone and Starlight Zone, i'm assuming you're talking about the Megadrive/Genesis version of the game. The music i've made here is from the 8-Bit Master System/Game Gear version of Sonic 1 (apologies if i'm stating the obvious).
Starlight Zone is a nice change of pace from Labyrinth. I think that initially, Starlight was going to be one of the earlier Zones, which is a theory backed up by the fact that Sonic 1 has multiple revisions released in different regions. I believe that two of the Japanese versions of the game had two different level orders on the level select screen, which indicates that Starlight could have appeared as an earlier Zone perhaps? I dunno, it is surprisingly easy considering it's place in the game.
As far as Labyrinth goes, as i've played Sonic 1 countless times over the last 20 years, i've pretty much got my routes through all three acts nailed into my memory. XD On act 3 for example, i always take the bottom route (stand on one of the blocks that falls gently downwards past some fish-based badniks) as it's a much quicker and easier way to get to the area just before the boss where the water rises.
I agree with you about Hill Top Act 2, it is the much easier route. I believe you avoid the lava-rising-cave areas that way.
Interesting comment! Thanks for that! :)
