To be honest, I couldn't really say how I do it. Sometimes I can specifically see where I want the lines to be in a design and sometimes I use a model to get the limb positions right.
as long as I lay out a line of flow for the image and have a clear and distinct idea in my mind for what I want it to look like then the rest just kinda comes these days :)
