Nope, not LoTR. A more modern high fantasy series that features a bitter anti-protagonist,

okay, that eludes me. anti-protagonist? The Dragon Bone Throne comes to mind, but that doesn't feature a critter like that... and I'm afraid I don't know too many high-fantasy series with anti-hero types. :)
