I don't really know how else you could do it really. With the HUD elements you'd either have to have very good ventilation if it was a full head helmet, or a nose/mouth mask, which would block up even more of the face. Where as the idea for this one was that it's either open, or if necessary you can tack the facial mask under the visor (I imagine it would snap on).
One of the biggest pains-in-the-ass I had for one of my old writing projects (which I'd like to revisit someday, but I digress) was trying to design a fighter pilot style oxygen mask/pressure suit helmet for muzzled furries and big-beaked avians. I wound up going with these obnoxiously huge things not too unlike Big Van Vader's mastadon helmet http://www.4thletter.net/gavok/wcw/mastadon.jpg that would've been entirely too damned heavy in actual use. I can't imagine space suit helmets would be any better.
