What happened after the episode aired? o_o To me, the mood in the episode wasn't romantic, it was just odd for Marceline to be so honest with her feelings. She got flustered the same way when her dad found out how she really felt. Tough girls don't have feelings! Bubblegum was surprised and Marceline was embarrassed.
People just like to read into blushes and situations like that or are perhaps too familiar with tropes often seen in romance animes. :P
Either way, people can like what they like, ship what they wanna ship and draw what they wanna draw. I do not care. It was just refreshing to see the characters at least retaining their personalities for once. :)

I agree, I didn't think the episode had a romantic tone at all, but some people did.
The whole debacle was kind of stupid. I'm not 100% on the details, but here's more or less what happened:
There's an online Adventure Time fan show called "Mathematical!" which is run by the Frederator company. Frederator runs it, but it isn't actually made by anyone who works on the show. It's just a show that rallies around the AT fandom.
The edition of Mathematical following "What Was Missing?" made heavy implications about Marceline and Bubblegum having romantic ties. That in itself isn't BAD (It's a fan show, after all) but it made it seem like it was a sure thing and that it was canon.
Adam Muto was (I believe) the main writer for this episode. Someone asked him on his Formspring what he thought about the Mathematical video and he expressed his displeasure. I think his intention for the episode was for people to wonder what might have happened in Marceline and Bubblegum's past. I think the way the Mathematical video jumped to conclusions ended up making him pretty upset.
A few people took his angry response as him being anti-gay and they started extrapolating and making it into a huge shitstorm.
Fred Seibert himself (God bless that man and everything he stands for!) took time to directly answer people's angry letters and stuff just do diffuse the situation.
It was a huge mess, and basically there were a bunch of people saying that AT started out wanting Marceline and Bubblegum to have a romantic relationship, but then they got backlash and so they got scared and tried to change/cover it up.
Something like that. Like I said, the whole thing was CRAMMED full of stupid.
I'm all for same-sex relationships being depicted in cartoons. Whatever works, man. I'm just not cool with people digging for the opportunity to fight a problem that isn't even there.
Whoa. Getting ranty here. Sorry :p

Everyone's always looking for an excuse, it seems. :P Ugh.
Well that is...dumb. I'm all for same-sex depictions, too, it doesn't bother me, just...like you said, it shouldn't even be an issue in this case. How often do you see a cartoon that actually pairs two characters and makes it canon? It will probably never happen in that show, imo. People can take whatever they want from whatever happens in the show and apply their own reality and that's part of what makes fiction special. Misleading people to think it's canon and then getting upset with the writer of the episode when he acts upset about it is...crossing a line. :P

Well, from the mouth of Muto...

Mostly, they want people to talk about the show and create little fan narratives for their characters. But they don't want these fan narratives to dominate the show or take away from the fact it's about Finn and Jake and Adventure Time. Everything else is supposed to be juicy subtext and conjecture, but not part of the shows main narrative. Mathematical took the fan narrative and basically suggested that it's the shows narrative, which wasn't cool.

Haha, oh what luls were had during the whole Bubbleine debacle. I'm not one of those people who automatically assumed the Marceline/Bubblegum relationship was romantic (I'll wait for the show to confirm or deny this when they decide to do so) but it doesn't mean I can't enjoy the art.
So pretty. So very pretty.
