So . . .
this guy I used to know committed suicide a few weeks past. He and I were pretty close friends once. Had a bad falling out. I was long over it, but we'd never made up. I tried a couple of times, but never got the chance.
I would be flattering myself to think that contributed to his ultimate fate. We'd both long since moved on. Still, we were friends once, and I'm sad he was in so much pain. So I made this for him. He was obsessed with monkeys. Some of the other images have a specific relevance to him personally. Others just spoke to me as being "right".
The title is more for him than me. A lot of people like to judge folks who take their own lives, and that's not me. I think of suicide as terminal depression - death due to illness. I don't think it's a sin. Just sad.
So here it is. Who knows what he'd think of it, but I do hope he's in a better place.
Back when he and I were having drama, this song reminded me of him. Kinda still does, but in such a different way now.
Gollum's Song
Where once was light
Now darkness falls
Where once was love
Love is no more
Don't say goodbye
Don't say I didn't try
These tears we cry
Are falling rain
For all the lies you told us
The hurt, the blame!
And we will weep to be so alone
We are lost
We can never go home
So in the end
I'll be what I will be
No loyal friend
Was ever there for me
Now we say goodbye
We say you didn't try
These tears you cry
Have come too late
Take back the lies
The hurt, the blame!
And you will weep
When you face the end alone
You are lost
You can never go home
You are lost
You can never go home

I love Gollum's song. When I am having a good sad, I play it. Emillia Torana is the perfect voice for it.
Is that a lion in the top-left corner? Lions have long been associated with mourning for me, since I had two lions drawn for me after Cameron died. The expression on that one speaks volumes.
*Hugs* Be at peace.

Golum's song: agreed, completely. Somehow, though, it's always reminded me of two specific people, and this guy was one of them. I listened to it constantly when I first cut him out of my life. I don't normally do stuff like that (he's the only person ever, to tell the truth - everyone else I've been pissed at, I just politely avoided and/or eventually made up with). So it was a big deal at the time.
Lion: yes, a lioness. I love that image. I used it in my Asherah devotional too. I chose it for this piece because of the expression, as you noted, but after I picked it I remembered that my former friend was a Leo. Huh.
*hugs back* thank you. I mostly am. Mentioned the whole thing to my counselor two sessions ago, and feel pretty serene about the whole thing. We really didn't know each other any more. It's been something like 8 years. But I still wanted to make him some art. I never hated him, and I always wished him well, even when I wanted him out of my life. *shrug* Anyway, it feels good to have finished it.
