This piece is inspired by many things.
Prior to Rainfurrest I was reading up on Native American mythology involving tales of the trickster Coyote, mainly "Giving Birth to Thunder" by Barry Lopez, and "American Indian Trickster Tales" by Richard Erdoes and Alfonso Ortiz.
One re-occuring theme I enjoy involves Coyote building the world and the animals. I eventually settled on the spirits in the sky to reflect that of the Haida art and culture you see here on the West coast.
A HUGE thanks goes out to
anthrofox for buying this at my table at Rainfurrest 2011, extra props to him for accurately guessing the setting of this scene too. You rock dude :)

i read one that the animals would get lost during the new moon because there wher no stars. so the sky spirits made a temporary staircase to the sky that would disappear at sunrise and told the animals to make pictures of themselves in the sky using pebbles, but the cyote doesnt have a constellation because he was greedy and wanted his to be the best, so he carried as many pebbles as he could but he didnt make it to the sky before sunrise so he didnt get to make his picture in the sky.
Ooh, that's very similar to a few versions I've heard on this end!
The version I'm most familiar with is the gods handing pebbles to the animals to use the sky as a canvas, but Coyote missed out on the meeting. So he grabbed his own pebbles and tripped on a large rock, scattering the stones into the sky where it collided with all the other animals pebbles, ruining the artwork. All the animals were mad at him but the gods told them not to be upset with Coyote as it was simply 'meant to be'.
So cuz of Coyote's actions our star system is... a bit mucked up there :)
Your version is awesome too!

I actually have a badge done by someone back in the day who used this. He was making badges with something similar to backlight foil.. might've actually been it...? It's very shiny and almost seems to 'glow' when viewed at certain angles. It's currently a fridge magnet.
