Let's get something more dignified on to my page :)
I honestly cannot believe that it's been nearly a year and a half since I first submitted the guitar and MIDI versions of this song - it looks like the rate of my music writing really did go downhill! Like I've said before, I've got a lot of things in progress, but... perhaps not so much that I'm actually finishing. I need to stick to one song and actually get it done...
This seemed appropriate, coming back from Furfright, though - as unsure as I was at first, it seemed so much like another world there and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it for the last couple of weeks. I've reworked it in my normal Modplug style, which you'll hopefully hear more of much sooner than the gap between my last submissions!
Most of what I have to say about this one is already in the original submission, so here's a tour of some other songs as well - I should say that the base for this song owed a lot to Beyond the Black Hole by Gamma Ray, particularly the bare power chords section near the end. In Beyond the Black Hole where it happens at 4:45, it's also a very rare instance of power metal narration being epic and not accidentally hilarious (though you might think differently on that :) )
Just before that section in Dream of Albion, I really liked the vocal C-section, and then my wife mentioned that it sounded like Dr Stein. Which it does, a bit - it shares that kind of mood with the chorus, even though it was completely unintentional, and now I can't unhear it.
And of course, a lot of the solo is a reference to my own song called Albion, from a frighteningly long time ago. It's not a direct sequel to that song as the title might imply, but the actual subject of it should be quite clear!
Lyrics
Taken far through the stars for just a moment now
To a place that's better than your life
Ripped again from that world, your heart's still set on there
Blind to earth, and staring up to the sky
Wasting time
And missing life
Waiting forever for someone to save you from all
And we sleep and keep on dreaming
As the world becomes our dying home
Know we have no future
As we sleep and dream of Albion
In the eyes of the world and every single life
We are death, invaders from the sky
You think that you've found unending paradise
Yet to learn this world was not meant for you
Lost in sleep
Eternally
You can't live your life by borrowing somebody's dream
And we sleep and keep on dreaming
As the world becomes our dying home
Know we have no future
As we sleep and dream of Albion
A false world that you chose
Stumbling through life with eyes closed
Wake up and realize you're alive
Out of the chaos of this world
New life is given birth
And we can build our own Albion
Right here with all the wonder of our earth
But we sleep and keep on dreaming
As the world becomes our dying home
Know we have no future
As we sleep and dream of Albion
We dream of Albion
Lifeless and cold as our world
We're trapped inside this dream forever
This dream of Albion
We dream of Albion

I originally got it from something a little older, but here it's used to mean an imagined ideal world - so it can be anything you want it to be :)
He'd be really good :) I haven't heard much of Gamma Ray's first three albums apart from the material that later got remade later, but... he's really impressive, especially being able to actually hold extremely high notes live without studio magic. I actually had another 'wailer', Michael Kiske in mind while writing this!
He's still around, you know!

He's currently trying to challenge Jorn Lande for who can produce furrier album covers, with Magnus Karlsson serving as referee by virtue of being the guitarist for both of them. (the 3:20 mark or so made me see what you mean about him and the high notes, incidentally.)

By "he" I meant Ralf Scheepers, sorry.
Well, Kiske is around too, he's just trying to make the space-time continuum explode with his new band and their downright *impressively* tangled lineup.

Yes, I was thinking so much in the Gamma Ray vein there that I'd forgotten that wasn't what he was actually known for, now. He actually now sounds a lot more... controlled than he used to, as the albums up to Insanity and Genius had this... almost 'live' feeling to the vocals, slightly looser than I'm used to (this isn't the best example, but it was the only one I could find).
And I do love that cover :) I don't think even I would come up with something to be able to compete with them yet...

And as always, thank you :) This one's definitely been going more slowly, but I don't know why... it seems that I'm starting a lot of songs, but I haven't been able to concentrate enough on many of them to actually finish them this time. I think this is going to be like racing snails, with the ones that crawl to the finish first out of the selection of fourteen I've currently got going eventually being the ones that I'll release!
Actually, when I first hear this very file, I though "what, nothing changed, it's still the pure epic davidness. I remembered the previous version sounding like this (didn't heard for a moment).
I had to listen to the old file to really figure it out :-P So yah, definitely a signature. And I keep saying that I love this style that is yours.
