Since I am living in permanent deadline now I decided to show you at least something.

1. use default style (and of course without shadows and mist) while you are editing your model.
2. Making component from part of your model will help too. I do not know why.
Maybe because CPU of your computer does not need to be ready for editing component every second while you are working. So CPU is less busy.
So as soon as possible make components
3. use layers. Sometimes you do not have to see whole your model while working.
For example I did pretty big village. And I put blocks of that village at different layers. When I am choosing point of view I just turned off visibility of of blocks which I do not need to see from that point of view.
I hope this is understandable. My English sucks :)
