Now that I'm back from my little holiday I'm keeping myself busy like a happy bumblebee. I'm working on all kinds of images, commissions being the priority.
This was a real treat to draw!
lechevalier commissioned me to draw a tavern scene where Michel De Grammont is defending the honour of this one gypsy cat after a certain loudmouth slipped out a badly chosen insult. Show him who's the boss, Michel!

One of the usually understated talents in a work of art is choosing the right moment to capture. A spilled goblet and knocked over chair giving us a snapshot of the immediate past, I think this moment is perfect. We can see Michel's intention in clear view, but this is the most effective point because I'm left wondering how the rest of the scene plays out. Any further and it would diminish the mystery. You seem to sum up the entire scene in media res.
Rip looks insulted that someone would pick him up that way, and I think that's where the comedy is in this piece.
Michel:"How DARE you!"
Ripkin:"How dare YOU!"
Perhaps I'm sounding like a broken record here, but again with the colours! You seem to be progressing with them, as you're portraying the characters with them. All of the characters are bathed in an analogous palette with the background, except for Ripkin. He literally stands out like a sore thumb, and his caustic nature is costing him now!

I've come to the conclusion that it's safer to just put dark splotches where the shadows approximately are and sprinkle red lanterns all over the place... I don't really know how the shadows are supposed to fall for real. =)
But I'm very happy that you like the picture! I'm always happy when you like the stuff I come up with. =3

Oh, honey, once again I'm utterly stunned by the level of detail and accurate texturing you put into your background. PLEAASE teach me how to work like that. Oh please! *throws herself at your feet and kisses your toes*
The scene itself so vibrant and moody. The shadows cast from the lanterns and the orange glow from them really sets the scene here for a tavern feel, and staring at this image, I can almost hear the lap of the waves against the dock, the heavy thump of all the footsteps echoing from the wooden floors, and the scrape of the feet over them. It seems like your Ripkin got himself into mischief again, but that little surprises me!
I love all the crinkled folds in Michel's overcoat, and the costume design of the gypsies outfit. I tell you, if I could live my life in such clothing, I would be happy no matter where I was!
You've once again proven yourself to be imaginative, dilligent, and versatile with both faces of amusement and the roar of challenge. And that one cat in the background, his gruff curiousity is just perfect!
Ahh, Chevalier is so lucky to have gotten this from you!
And welcome back!!

Wow, I really don't know what to say... Well, thank you, of course - although I wish I could better express my feelings. You're too kind to me, Sharra. =)
The textures are really easy. You just choose a pattern you like, paste it on a multiplying layer and then stretch, skew and tweak it so that it fits on top of the coloured surface. Starting with a dark background works well for me, I just darken the shadows to hide all the errors in the lineart. x)

Charha certainly looks like she's enjoying herself! Must be the combination of a good tavern brawl and having her honor defended by her handsome friend.
Ripkin of course has to have his cigarette doesn't he? :P.
I love your boot designs. And all the shinies are great! And the wood grain of the floor. And the shadows look right and add depth.

Aye, aye. Charha is quite pleased, I guess she's pretty certain that Ripkin will find some way to squirm out of this mess.
And thanks! I've got a thing for boots. I personally like to wear big clumpy leather boots even in the summer because they make me feel like some geeky fantasy style adventurer. xD
