Ever since I signed onto FA and started drawing anthros, people have been wondering which one is supposed to be me.
A lot of people thought it was Jet, but honestly, my account has her name because it was all I could think of.
A couple of months ago, I decided that it was finally time to insert myself into this cast I've created, if nothing else to give my characters someone to kick if I do something exceptionally horrible to them.
So, here she is; Truth, the Lupine Sphinx.
Why is she a Lupine Sphinx? That is answered in two parts that I will hopefully never forget:
When I was in my late teens, I had a friend who was a wiccan, (she moved away), and she said that my views on religion were really interesting; she wanted me to meet a friend of hers.
So, I go with her to meet this guy. I'm not what you'd call a 'social' person, but I will extend my hand for a shake during introductions. This guy put forth his hand, got about an inch from mine, then yanked it back like it might bite him. "You have a really strong sense of justice, a strict moral code you live by, don't you?"
A little shaken, I replied, "well, yeah. Doesn't everybody?"
"No," he said, "yours is so overpowering that you would not be able to sleep at night if you did something against it."
"Yeah," I said again, "doesn't everybody?"
"No," he said, "no, they don't." He then proceeded to ask me how I felt about riddles, puzzles, and games of wit.
"I love them, can't get enough," I repllied.
After which, he asked my opinion on dragons, elementals, unicorns, pheonix, centaurs, and mythical creatures in general.
I replied that I believe they had to once exist because how else could such a congruence of belief exist all over the world without at least some truth, (and the scientists who found Roc fossils this year give credence to this arguement), but when beings of power began to be hunted, they left. Pooled their powers and made a new dimension, possibly.
He said that I was close, that in fact they had all gone into a kind of hiding, lying dormant inside the hearts of humans and being reborn as they are.
And then he got a look on his face like his taco just passed wind in his mouth and said, "and you, you have the most VICIOUS Sphinx I have ever seen alseep in your heart. Really just a nasty piece of work."
All I could do was blink.
"Sometimes you shrug your shoulders and you feel the urge to stretch, something that should be there but isn't." This wasn't a question, and I couldn't deny he was right. I didn't eat much of my lunch that day.
The second part is this:
My mother works in an indian casino and is friends with one of the Tribal Elders. As any proud mother of a college student would, she would talk about me all the time.
This particular Elder enjoyed carving totems and is very good at it. One day, he came into the casino my mother works in and handed her a hand-painted wooden totem, "I want you to give this to your daughter," he said.
"I will," mom promised, (it's very pretty, well-made, and sitting on my nightstand this very moment), "but if you don't mind, why?"
"Well," he replied, "I was thinking about everything you've told me about your daughter the other day. I didn't realize I had a piece of wood in my hand and by the time I ran out of stories about your daughter, I had the makings of this totem in my hands."
Mom said his voice got very solemn right then, "it's clear the Wolf has chosen your daughter for something. I don't know what, but that tells me she was chosen."
So, there you have it. What do you get when the Wolf chooses you and you have a Sphinx asleep in your heart? I don't know about anybody else, but I got this pretty girl right here.
