This is Elvira, who's gotten over being "Miss Hissy Bits" now (just need to find her the correct sized food) and is exploring this new area from the safety of my hand. She's been officially identified as a Texas Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta lindheimerii) and with good care can get up to 6 feet long, which is bound to give some human a case of the hissy fits. The folks at JBS Wetlands (who own snakes) say she looks fine.

You're braver than I am! My sister found a little garter snake about that size in my parent's house, and after handling it among us, when it came to me and I was handling it the little bastard bit me - twice! - right on my knuckle!
I wanted to throw it down and stomp on it right then but no - I was good and took it outside and let it loose anyway. I don't mind snakes but I'm a bit shy about handling them...

Been trying that, but she won't eat. If I tease her with it (I think I'm doing it wrong), she will grab it and then fling it with her head. Leaving her alone with it hasn't worked yet.
I gave her a "rest day" today since she was hiding in the litter and acting very cranky. I hope she'll want to eat tomorrow.
