batter, simple way, is just make pancake batter out of cornbread mix!
I used the complex method:
2/3 cups of all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of yellow corn meal
1 tablespoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of salt
1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of cayenne
1 egg
3/4 cup of whole milk
4 hot dogs or veggie dogs
4 tablespoons of cornstarch (for dredging)
4 skewers (cut to a 6 inch length)
fry those suckers, till GBD. they were awesome.

Likely use a pan to fry them...bit less oil that way. But at some point, I want to get a deep-fryer for the house. I am fairly sure no one else will use it but me, so I don't feel like it would be a bad idea.
One good thing about using a deep-fryer or such, though, is that, so long as you don't cook something like fish, you can use the same oil for several times; and potatoes get the off flavors out of oil like a dream. Makes life so very much easier. haha
I am curious as to how they would turn out with something akin to a beer batter - but that will have to wait, since it is Sunday ans I am out of beer...

as to that...alot of fried foods will stone to the bottom, pretty quickly. having a deep frier...just implies that it's...DEEEEEP and by the time it hits bottom the oil has formed a crust enough that the batter won't adhere to the bottom...however, this isn't true in the least! I had to waft the dogs in the oil for seveal seconds to ensure they got this safety crust. darn frier is really tiny...but what evs, i kept the basket in just so nothing touched the heating elements....
tempura fried things were a pain too, cause that's REALLY drippy batter. but having it in the basket means i just lift out the whole thing, knocke it out in the sink, then put it back, all the floaty bits are gone!

Ahhh, a nice simple way to make corndogs.
I would buy the frozen ones in the store but any and every brand, touts its "Amazing Honey Batter!"
And I hate honey batter on my Corn Dogs 8-)
The same for anyone that puts sugar in a cornbread mix... This is the real reason for the Civil War - those crazy northerners were adding sugar to it, and to maim and adulterate such a perfect bread staple from southern cooking, well, the lines had to be drawn. I bet those crazy yanks even put ketchup on em too... 8=P

heh. well, I add sweetener to my corndogs, sorry to say they just don't taste as good unsweetened. I'm not picky, I'll take anything from stevia, agave nectar, honey, molasses, regular sugar...it's all good, just... unsweetened is not ok for me. and I was born and raised in Mass. I"m NOT a southern boy. I will say this, though...I had my first taste of sweet potato pie in georgia...and it was REALLY sweet. so nyah! same with sweet tea. for me, half'n'half was much better than just sweet tea....gawd that stuff was overpowering.
