First rule for 'getting it'. Forget everything you know about previous MLP shows. This is not some uber pink all frilly girls show designed only to sell to little girls. The creator, Lauren Faust has worked on shows like Powerpuff Girls, Dexters Lab, Fausters Home for Imaginary Friends, and even Samurai Jack. She set out to make a show anyone could like and she did it with interesting, flawed, three dimensional characters that one can relate to. Look at almost any of the cast in the show and anybody will tell you that have at least one friend that's like one of them.
Second, the stories, while simplified, are 'slice of life' stories. Meaning that, while not exact, everyone can relate to having been in a similar situation once maybe. What's more, the show never 'talks down' to the viewers. Early episodes might over simplify, but more recent episodes show they never do the media equivalent of 'baby talk' to the fans. They talk plane, simple, and honest. It's not high culture, but it's not demeaning either.
Lastly, it's actually funny, carefully mixing some lighthearted drama with could old fashioned humor and sight gags makes it feel like it's borrowing the best from other cartoons while still trying to be unique.
And if all that isn't attention getting, then the best part some fans have said is the fan-base itself. Fans have created huge stories around these simple characters, everything from fun and weird situations to gripping drama and adventure. Literally the biggest fan-fiction has to be the crossover story Fallout: Equestria. 42 chapters long (currently) and all of those lengthy and detailed. A gripping adventure that borrows from all the games and yet tells it's own version of this barren world and how it came to be.
Honestly I hope some of this helps. If you want to know more, go to Equestria Daily, they have a lot of info on all of this.

I wasn't aware that Faust worked on samuria jack, I love that show though I didn't see many episodes I liked the few I saw.
I wanted to ask where I could find "Fallout: Equestria". I would like to read that, I love the Fallout series and I'm interested in how this crossover would work.

All the chapters are on probably the best pony information site online, Equestria Daily. Here's the link to the main story. http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/.....equestria.html There are many other stories that other fans have made in similar styles, but this was the first. Warning, it's a VERY long story. In print this would be a good sized book. So it will take a while to read.
Jaaa, Fluttershy ist unschlagbar was niedlichkeit angeht.
