For me, random public fursuiting is all about the public interaction.
Sure, you get the same 20 questions over and over, but it's
still darn fun to watch people's faces as they chat with a giant dog.
Sometimes, the moment turns absolutely golden.
Rambling around Main Street late one Sunday, I suddenly became
aware of these two gentlemen approaching at a frightening clip.
I barked out a greeting and gave them the happy paws. They
stopped in their tracks, unsure of their next move.
"Are you a...a...furry?" One of them asked.
"Yes, you bet!" I replied enthusiastically.
They looked at one another with wide eyes and wider smiles.
"I'm happy that you've heard of us, how do you know about
furry?" I continued.
Turns out they had seen something on MTV about furs, and they
had been dying to meet one ever since.
And gosh, did they have questions!
We talked for a good long while. Their queries were thoughtful and
respectful, and I felt proud to share what I knew about this wonderful
fandom. They were really interested in the specific logistics of fursuiting,
everything from designing the suit to what kind of undergarments to
wear.
I let them try on the handpaws. They admired the claws and squeaked
the squeaker and then one turned to the other and said
"This is the best thing EVER!"
They're almost right. The best thing ever to is to bring a smile
and some excitement to an otherwise routine afternoon.
The budding furries went on their way, armed with the newfound
knowledge that furries do exist in the real world.
I continued my stroll, a huge smile on my canine face, feeling
better than ever about this gig.
Maybe those two ladies at the bar want to have a beer with a talking
dog. Maybe I'll find more humans to educate. Maybe I'll make
a child smile and hide behind mom's legs. Whatever awaits, I'm
ready for more.
Maybe I should carry a spare fursuit for people to try on?

I fear to say that it was probably "1000 Ways To Die" that they saw the furry thing on. Quick thing about it: http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/1000_Ways_to_Die
hay husky!
the thing that they probably saw was this sadly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06Hl5-4r4JQ but dogbomb fix that!
but this is not what we were swept up in. that was something totally different. it was something called extra.
that sounds great dogbomb! great job! you make stuff like that look easy! keep rocking!

Very cool. Looks like you really made an impression.
I've spent about three years trying to find fursuiters in my area, and meeting suiters has been one of the most amazing experiences in my life. It's really fascinating, all the designs of suits and performances at conventions and out in public, and I love seeing the different reactions of passers-by. I've dreamed of trying on a fursuit and going out entertaining others, but I still have much to learn.

*waggwagg* That's a great question! What sort of under garments do furries wear anyway? As far as I can figure they just wear rubber bands and string. That is really cool you got to have this neat interaction with these 2! When
wen and I where out suiting last week a woman stopped her car got out and ran over to hug us both! That was really cool! Thanks for sharing your public fursuiting adventures! *hugs*

oh gosh that is simlistically awesome, dogbomb! I would certainly agree with you about public fursuiting- and Shade says he agrees too! We recently fursuited at a local zoo and man it was a blast! Enough about us- so so so so SO very happy to see you having a great time being your fluffy self ^^
It's amazing the reactions you get from people. I'm constantly surprised by the positive attitude from the random people you meet on the street! One of my fears about public suiting is the public's general negative impression of us as a fandom. I don't think I'd even have the guts to go out by myself like you do o.o
Focusing on the negative, attracts the negative.
If you call someone on the phone thinking "I'm probably annoying them..." you can almost bet that they will be. If you approach it as how you'll be helping/informing/making them happy to know something, that's usually the outcome.

The most interesting part about this story for me was that someone who knew nothing about furries saw something in the media about us (MTV, of all places,) and it WASN'T so horrifyingly negative that they either turned the other way or turned on the flamethrower the second they saw your smiling face. I'm seriously quite shocked at that. Not once have I seen mainstream media of any sort depict furries in a positive or neutral manner- it's always negative and looking at a very small cross-section that shows the worst side of the fandom.
One of my best friends is still convinced furries are just a sexual thing. Like he's Freud or something. :P It's pretty sad because my spirituality as a fur and what furry means to me is as important as religion is to a lot of people. Saying furry is a fetish to me is like telling a Christian they're only in it to get drunk off the communal wine.

1. Have you noticed your black fur fading from being in the sun or is it still as good as new?
2. You should check out either gopro or contour cameras. They are tiny point-of-view camcorders that you can easily hide in a fursuit head. Then you can film your first-person fursuiting!

Hi Rodg,
Thanks for sharing the experience. I am grateful that most of your encounters have been positive.
You talk about the "20 questions", but I have another question about your endeavors. Have you run into patrons that recognize e you from past visits? This is excluding the merchants, who are pretty much there all the time. I would think you have. Another way to help make the world a little smaller.
Cheers,
---> Wally

Fursuiting is the most wonderful thing I've ever encountered and somewhat the most unique. When I finally get a handler to go with me I hope to have many such encounters of all sorts. It's wonderful to bring a smile to someones' face. To tell others about our fascinating fandom. To help spread a positive word, as you have Dogbomb, about us.
I feel that although there is so much "negative" publicity out there, our fandom can and does rise above all of it on it's own merits.
Congratulations on spreading the word!

Nothing beats the smile on peoples' faces (especially the little kiddies) after they part with a big 'ol talking animal. Risk of heat stroke aside, fursuiting really is one of those unique and amazing things.
Keep up the good work! Maybe if I wasn't forced to be a hermit from my studies, I'd get out and do some more public suiting X3

It's so great to see people that are genuinely curious and that don't go right for the stereotypes! Especially if they're younger guys like this. Most of my friends only see the x-rated side of furry and think that it's all that way. But of course it's not. Sure it's a part of it, but an x-rated side exists to almost anything, like anime.
I don't know about bringing an extra suit along, that might make it more difficult to enjoy yourself x3

Guy turning around: Hm? oh I didn't know he was going o be here. ah well, I'll let 'em have fun.
Lady without sunglasses: MMM look at 'em. How you doin' sir? I have to say the one in the middle and the one with the tail look cute. mmmhm.
Lady with the sunglasses on: w-w-....what in the hell?! Animal people are invading the world!!
me: WOOOOOOO!!!! =D *hyper of half a can of Dr. Pepper and waving my arms around*
