Continuing in my Equestria dreamscape. With Celestia's decision to meet the Lord of Shadows in two days time and deal with him one way or another http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6814339, suddenly there was a heighten sense of urgency in the Palace. Also certain uncomfortable questions that had been put off up to this point could no longer be avoided.
For Applejack, there were obvious motivations for her wanting to be on the team that would go in and help lay out the stencil that I would use to paint the sun symbol. Her sister Applebloom was a hostage and she wanted her back, and if her release could not arranged then destroying the Lord of Shadows was perceived as being the best way to secure the hostages freedom.
However the premise was based on educated guesses of other similar situations. In theory if the Lord of Shadows was destroyed then his realm should vanish and all things that were not of his creation should return to their place of origin. Equestria. There was precedence for this premise in the theories of Pony magic, but when dealing with the magic from the land of shadows there were uncertainties.
Either Applejack had not considered it or had been purposely ignoring this point in her mind, but now it was a question that could no longer put off asking. What would happen to Applebloom if Lord of Shadows was destroyed? That was the question she asked Celestia one afternoon in the ballroom we were using for training.
Celestia had been expecting this question from Applejack, but still she could not give any guarantees to her. "We don't know for certain, but she and all the other hostages should be released." Replied the Princess. "But if we destroy the Lord of Shadows it might kill Applebloom to?" Applejack asked. Celestia looked away for moment before looking back at the golden earth pony. " Yes. The possibility exists that if we destroy him then everything in his realm will be destroyed to including the hostages." Celestia sighed. "So what you're saying is if I go along with this I maybe end up killing my little sister!" Applejack green eyes were filled a mixture of anger and fear, and although she stood and stared directly into the Princess's eyes Celestia could see her entire body was trembling with fear.
Celestia closed her eyes and hung her head. She could raise the sun and the moon. She had lived over a thousand years and faced many foes and crisis, and yet still she had no certainties for one little pony. Slowly she sat down so she could look more directly into Applejack eyes before she spoke again.
"Applejack I cannot guarantee that there is no risk in this enterprise for Applebloom. However I have to know whether you are still willing to be part of this team?" Celestia's voice was soft like the wind whispering through the trees. "Even if this does not bring her back are you willing to do this so no other pony has to feel this pain?" With one front hoof she reached out to Applejack. " If you can't do that then you can not go with us to the planetarium." Celestia shook her head slowly then she continued. "I will not think ill of you nor will anyone else if choose to decline, but I can have no ambiguity in this mission. I have to know if you're willing to take this task in spite of the risks." Celestia's mane billowed around the earth pony as she said this.
For several seconds Applejack stood there head bowed. When she looked up again her eyes were full of tears. "I'll do it." Then she started to cry uncontrollably. Celestia drew her close and just held her silently for while. At that moment it was probably the best thing she could do.

You're a genius! After all of the episodes with "Trollestia" and all of the sad fan stuff that paints such a bleak picture of her overly self-sacraficing life, what I want to see is Celestia enjoying some vacation. I wonder if I can convince you to draw her on a roller coaster squeeling happily with a Mickey Mouse hat...
It's great to see you're posting regularly again. The show's premiering in two weeks here, and knowing the LoS is about to get his ass handed (hooved?) to him, as well as that (if the hints I got are true) AJ's getting her sister back and Paynes and Sunrise will be reunited, is getting me immensely hyped
Poor Applejack. This feels even worse than seeing the other ponies in pain simply because she's so often the strong one; the one who keeps a rein on her emotions and fears around others, both out of a sense of privacy and the simple fact that she's seen nasty things happen before, and came out okay by staying calm.
And then this happens to her little sister, and the walls finally fall... and it hurts all the worse because there's nothing you can do but try to hope.
By the way, talking about the Lord of Shadows and Sweet Apple Acres, what's happened to Big Mac and Granny Smith? Did they get away from that monster, or did he get them too? I'm assuming not, simply because AJ would have mentioned them if so.

Granny Smith and Big Mac are fine. Worried and distressed over what has happened to not only Applebloom and the farm hands, but what AJ is going through. I know one of things that is tearing up AJ is the fact that she is one of the keepers of the Elements of Harmony and is held in high esteem in some important places, and yet after helping save a nation she is powerless to do anything directly to rescue the youngest member of her family.
TVtropes? Eh, no. That was based off something my Dad said once. And I mostly object to Kein's criticism of how Baron's self-insert is "wrecking the story" when this entire stream of art and story is Baron sharing something he dreamt. Baron was up front about this so I'm wondering what Kein expects to come of criticising this particular point.
Ah, sorry, I panicked. I'm way too used to witnessing arguments about whether someone is a good writer/artist/etc. or not, so I expected Kein to come back at you, and the whole thing to turn into a series of "NO U" one after another, so I stepped in.
As for the self-insert thing, I think there's a possibility that Kein doesn't believe Baron to have dreamed this up, and that's he's using it as an excuse to illustrate fanfic about pony!himself. It wouldn't surprise me -but I also wouldn't want it to turn into a source of drama.
Maybe I'm just a grade-A paranoid, who knows.

We often find it easier to accept our own fate, than to make the choices for others. The choices left to leaders weigh heaviest in their hearts, emotions run high, desires pull at our hearts, but in the end, more often than not, the right decision is the hardest choice, and often hurts the most.
