‘When all has fallen to ruin and the world seems destined to darken, step forth and pass the threshold, for you must cross it alone. All your fears laid bare, pass all self doubt, for you shall face the darkness and find if you are worthy of victory.’
Heh, so what was at first intended to be a small digital painting exercise, soon turned into a complete, fully painted piece. I had meant to just open a blank canvas and try some mark making (as it’s a fluid and fun way to practice when it comes to painting digitally), but the idea for this composition had been floating around in my head for quite some time, and was finally realised in front of me. I think I’ve mentioned before how hard it is to paint in dark tones, especially when there’s the uncertainty of how it will be perceived on different screens, so if this is too light or too dark I apologise in advance, and blast the colour black!
Btw, Lancelot faces his ultimate adversary… I shall leave the painting to do the rest of the talking.

Heheh wow, really like this picture (falls into one of my favorite categories). :P Aww don’t curse black, it’s a wonderful combination of every color that can shroud things in beautiful mystery, and I don’t think raising or lower its shade by a bit would take away from the overall image.
Really like the beast, has an ancient evil look to it and an interesting mix of several different animals’ features. Skull-like appearance of its snout/nose and its eyes keep getting my attention; really its whole head has a very interesting unique look to it.
Medieval style clothing on Lancelot and the character himself is well done and you were able to keep the colors dark/faded to blend well with the overall darkness of the image. Heheh really like the “Oh fuck” look to his body language.
Probably my favorite little detail to the image is the full moon in the distance and how you were able to give the whole sky (and parts of the ground) a clouded/foggy appearance.
Bravo

I'm adding this image to my "favorites" list because, in addition to it's technical merit and the fact that it's excellent visual storytelling, it's one of the very few pieces I've seen that genuinely gives me that crawly feeling on the back of my neck that can herald the start of a world-class creep-out. There's something about that Dark creature that affects me on a visceral level that few "evil" or "creepy" things manage to reach.
I know it's been...well, months, but I just had an idea or two about why this was so very effective for me:
On the one hand, people have been afraid of the dark and the things that thrive in it since time out of mind. In the brightly lit modern world we sometimes forget that old fear, but most of us still have at least a little bit of it somewhere in the back of our psyche. This picture pretty well sums that up.
On the other hand, the Dark creature also reminds me of a beautiful animated (based on some of Brian Froud's work) version of one of the legends of Oisin that I saw when I was little. It was anything but mythologically accurate, but it did include some powerful images and storytelling. One of those images was a magically enlivened shadow that escaped its master and became monstrously malevolent. I had a few nasty nightmares about that thing, and while your design is different it has a similar feeling to it.
