Mm so true and so under-appreciated. ...but as a firemedic I live in the borderworld between the two. Nonetheless when the pure fire guys get all high and mighty, I remind them: you can drive the unit, run EMS calls, or even sit in on a transport, but until you've sat in the back seat with a critical patient whose life is in your hands, you'll never truly understand what it's like to be a medic.
