On that subject, are there any charities or organisations for whale welfare/captivity issues you could recommend? I'd love to help out, I'm still thinking about going back to school and taking up something like biology with a view to working in the marine environment. :)
Tough question. There is a lot of organisations out there that do great things and raise awareness.
Any organisation like WDCS, The Black Fish, OceanCare.. the list goes on!
You also have the more extreme guys like the Sea Shephards (You may have heard of them on the Discovery channel programe Whale Wars. They like to harass the whalers and prevent them from poaching).
Not sure if they are taking actual volunteers, i wouldn't recommend it anyway. :P
If you want to potentially get more hands on, I know The Black Fish are seeking crew. Local stranding rescue are always accepting volunteers who can be on stand-by to aid stranded marine mammals. British Divers Marine Life Rescue is one example. http://www.bdmlr.org.uk/
You could also try volunteering with some whale watchers and researchers. There's quite a few on the Welsh coast that i believe are seeking helping hands.
One key issue currently is with Morgan the Orca. You'll find out information about her here. www.freemorgan.com
Even if you could spread the word about her, donate or share around this petition helps. We need to make a stand that companies can't just claim stranded cetaceans for their own needs and profits.

If you have any plans to attend WhaleFest 2012 no doubt they'll need volunteers to staff the event.
If you want more info on a specific areas, note me. I'll dig up what i got.
