Since I'm posting pictures of fossils i might as well post my latest piece to my collection. This is a Hadrosaur egg. Its about 65 million years old from the late Cretaceous period. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrosaurid) These are better known as the duckbill dinosaur. This thing is rather large too. I put a battery next to it so you could get an idea just how big it was. If you tap on parts of the egg you can tell its hollow in some areas were air is trapped.

Ack.. Oh no, sorry I didn't clarify, no I didn't find this one.. I bought this for my personal collection. I WISH i could find something like this. This one came from China in the Xi'an Providence. I am hoping to some day find some Mosasaur fossils. Those fossils are found in this area. I know they recently found one in Fort Worth and one down the street here in Arlington.
My guess is that there was some gas from decomposition that was trapped before the fossilization was complete. It could mean that there was a crack along the bottom due to pressure build up or it could be that there was enough pressure keep it all intact.
In any case that is just a beautiful specimen. I love seeing history like that, trying to imagine how it came to be preserved. It's fun to think back to when the planet was a much different place and after 4 billion years there have been so many changes.
I haven't found many fossils in my neighborhood but I'm surrounded by stone some of which goes back to the Archean Eon some 2.5 Billion years ago. It blows me away to think on that scale of time.
