Momma sighed as she finally got off the bus and looked up at the Jubilife City Poketch Company. She had a brief flashback to Saffron City where she’d lived for so many years and the Silph Co building she had seen more times then she could count and she couldn’t help but think one thing “… it’s so small.” Compared to the towering building she remembered from Saffron the Poketch Company was positively tiny. She shook her head to clear it and entered the building. She couldn’t let herself get distracted with old memories, especially not now of all times.
No, she needed to focus on the task at hand completely she thought grasping the papers clutched in her hand a little firmer. She was here for a purpose after all, a purpose that she had put off for far, far too long. After all she’d taken this whole weekend off, leaving Petie’s older sister in charge of the house since she was visiting from college, to take care of this so she couldn’t lose her nerve now. It was finally time to see her husband again after about eight years of absence… and to divorce him.
Walking through the lobby towards the main desk Momma couldn’t suppress the memories that started coming to her. When she and Alex were young and dating, how charming the raticate had been, how kind and loving… their wedding had been blissful and she was happy. Then their first child had come and she noticed a change that had come over Alex. He was more distant and quiet, spending more time at work then at home as if he was scared of his own kid, but even then she had still seen him and they were still husband and wife.
Then their second child had come and she found herself unable to do anything as Alex distanced himself from them even further, even taking a job transfer to Jubilife. He said it was to help support the family and she wanted to believe him… but she’d done a little looking behind his back and found something that had just about broke her heart. He could have just as easily gotten his promotion and stayed in Saffron, his transfer to Jubilife was his idea completely. She’d tried to put it out of her mind and just be happy whenever he did come home and for many years it seemed to work… and then Petie was born.
She couldn’t say she was surprised when her husband didn’t turn up for the birth of his youngest child or that his visits got rarer and rarer till he stopped coming at all… but she simply didn’t want to believe the mon she loved had abandoned them and had tried to go on and raise her children as if nothing was wrong. She had gone on like this, even moving to Viridian to try and forget about it, but it had always haunted her… and now she had found someone who made her feel as happy as she had been when she and Alexl were first married, someone who wouldn’t abandon her and her kids. Which meant it was finally time to face facts and confront her “husband” after all these years.
The secretary at the front desk looked up to the large ursaring nervously and cleared her throat “Um… can I help you ma’am?” she said, snapping Momma out of her recollecting. Giving as pleasant a smile as she could under the circumstances Momma said “Hello, my names Gwendolyn Liratten. I’m here to see my husband Alex. He should be the head of Research and Development last time I heard.” The secretary just stared at her blankly for a moment as Momma’s fur prickled a little in annoyance as she prayed the next words out of the girls mouth wouldn’t be…
“He’s married?”
Behind her smile Momma was gritting her teeth as she nodded and of good measure showed her drivers license to further prove it. Even then the secretary didn’t look like she believed it as she directed the bear on where to find Alex. As she headed for the elevators she heard the secretary turn and ask another worker “Did you know Alex was married?” which was bad enough but the response of “No, I’d never heard him mention it.” made her grind her teeth in frustration as she tapped her foot impatiently while waiting for the elevator.
One short elevator ride later she was on the proper floor… and completely lost. She sighed as she looked around the similar looking halls and the various scientists and workers going about their business… or staring at the giant bear wandering around aimlessly. Finally she sighed and asked for directions and ended up having to explain what she was doing there again. She tried to hide a growing twitch of frustration with ever exclamation of “He’s married?” “He never mentioned he was married.” and “He never talked about you before.”
By the time she finally got the proper directions to Alex’s lab there was a vein throbbing in anger on her forehead and if she’d clinched her fist any tighter she’d be drawing blood. She was praying she’d be able to resist the urge to punch Alex through a wall when she finally did see him as she walked through the halls finally stopping at a door simply marked “Research Lab 3” She looked at it for a moment then simply pushed it open without bothering to knock.
She paused to look around, several computers showing schematics and programs she couldn’t begin to understand, various bits and pieces of electronics laying around everywhere in random piles, half-finished machines occupying the only clear spaces on the tables… this was definitely Alex’s work room. Even after all these years she recognized his style of “organization” anywhere… but where was the rat to go with the rats nest?
She looked for a minute before she saw a familiar mop top of fur stick up beyond a pile of what looked like defective app cards for the poketchs. Navigating the cluttered room she was finally able to see the reason she’d come all this way. Sitting on a tall stool was a short and stocky raticate man with thick hair that seemed to spike up on its own wearing a near spotless lab-coat and a pair of thick glasses under safety goggles. He looked like a mad scientist that managed to escape from some children’s cartoon. It was unmistakably Alex Liratten, her husband.
She stared at him for a moment, feeling her barely suppressed anger boiling up to the surface the longer she looked. He just sat there, head hung a little as he looked at the empty table in front of him and did nothing. He wasn’t even acknowledging she was there!! She let out a furious growl and grabbed his shoulder before spinning him around to face her completely prepared to start screaming at him in anger. She paused mid breath when she finally got a good look at his face.
Behind the safety goggles and glasses he looked at her weakly with half lidded eyes that showed nothing but surrender to what he knew was coming. His whiskers drooped and his expression was of complete submission. The bastard not only looked like he knew what she was going to do to him but also knew he had it coming was expecting it. Maybe he’d been expecting it for a long time…
Teeth still bared Momma growled and released her grip on him. She still wanted to hurt him as badly as she’d been hurt… but she couldn’t bring herself to Hammer Arm him. Not like this. It would be too much like kicking a puppy in the cancer ward. She took a deep shaky breath to try and calm herself, which didn’t help too much, and slammed the papers down on the table in front of him.
“These are the forms to make our divorce legal; something tells me I don’t need to explain WHY I’m divorcing you so I’ll just skip to the important parts. You will sign these. You will sign these RIGHT NOW. I’m not here to take anything from you, not money, not possessions, nothing… I just want to put this behind me and my family and NEVER SEE YOU AGAIN, which isn’t asking too much seeing how I haven’t seen you once in so many damn years. You will never bother Petie or me again either, you understand?”
Momma managed to keep her voice level throughout the whole speech though her bared fangs and furious expression did the shouting for her as she looked at Alex expecting some kind of response. She got none as he weakly picked up a pin a signed the papers one by one without so much as a word. When he finished and handed them back to her she just looked at him for a moment longer before taking the papers. She was still mad as hell… but beating him to a bloody pulp like this wouldn’t do anything for it. He wasn’t worth the effort. Instead she simply said “Goodbye.” and walked out the door.
She found herself standing in the hall surrounded by what she had to guess was every member of the Research & Development department. Apparently news traveled really fast and they’d likely been listening in on her whole speech. She growled softly, not feeling up to having to explain herself to people who had nothing to do with her issue with Alex as well as still feeling like beating something. Luckily there was enough sense of self-preservation among them that they parted like water to let her through doing their best to keep out of arms reach. Not bothering to thank them she headed down the hall at a brisk pace.
Once she was through the crowds and once again alone in the halls she stopped and took a few deep breaths to try and calm herself. When that failed she turned her eyes to an empty trash can in the hall. She looked at it for a good minute, debating whether or not doing what she was considering was a good idea of no… then she decided to hell with it and unleashed in inner rage on the poor can with one monstrous Hammer Arm. It crumpled like it was made of aluminum foil as the sheer impact had nearly completely flattened it… as well as left a small crater in the floor.
Realizing she MIGHT have overdone expressing her anger Momma quickly made haste towards the elevator and was suddenly really glad she’d chosen to do that when there was no one around. Waiting for the elevator to finally come she sighed. She was still frustrated as all hell… but she needed to put that behind her now. This unpleasant business with Alex was finally done… after Arceus knows how many years it was done and she was finally free.
Which meant she needed to put this behind her, she didn’t know if she’d ever be able to fully let go of her anger towards Alex… but she needed to move on. After all she had a bright future waiting for her back home, waiting for both her and Petie. She finally found a mon she could love who wouldn’t abandon her and Petie got the father figure he’d never had. With all of that waiting for her she couldn’t help but feel her anger slowly melt away as she stepped into the elevator. She didn’t know what to expect from this point onward but she did know that things were going to get better now.
She chuckled softly and smiled, wondering to herself how long it’d take the legal system to process these papers so she could be officially divorced. It didn’t matter too much though… she and James were hoping to get married the moment it happened so no amount of time would be soon enough for them. The only hang up now would be planning the wedding…
How hard could that possibly be?
