A story for a world-building exercise in my local writers' group. This is to introduce the chimerae (no, not chimeras; chimerae is far more aesthetically pleasing, English be damned) and the character of Duard, who I like well enough to make a recurring character, perhaps. It's not... really a furry story, but I gave the chimerae long ears and tails, along with thin body fur, so it's close enough. But, uh, it wasn't meant to be furry, when I started. Maybe I corrupted it.
Mild violence, but nothing graphic at all. A little bit of language, so if the word "bastard" offends you, please go f-- ...I mean, don't read this. Also, funny thing? This was originally going to be a comedy. "Wait, I just set up a terrible existence for this guy! How can I make this happy? ...Screw it. ALL ABOARD THE TRAIN TO WEEPYVILLE"

Wow. You managed to make a wretch into a lovable character, with a whole life story behind him, in just six pages.
Still, at some point I'd like to see Duard accomplishing something important. Otherwise, all his suffering will have been pointless. Realistic, perhaps, but hardly good storytelling.

Oh, certainly -- but this is part of a greater world-building project, of which my work is only a part. If he does do something important, it'll be a while later -- I'm still setting up his personality (cynical, smooth-talking brawler) in the two works I've written. So he'll have to wait to do something really important! We're still working on the overarching plot.
