When the inevitable 'flashbacks' of 2011 are finally assembled, among the big news stories we'll remember this year by include Japan's big earthquake and tsunami, the deaths of two well-known foreign dictators, a 'Royal Wedding' in England, the "Occupy Wall Street" protests across the USA, and the numerous campaigns of Republican Presidential candidates...
On the seamier side of 2011 news was the infamous "Penn State Sex Scandal" - revolving around the prime suspect ex-coach Jerry Sandusky - which resulted in the ouster of several staff members of the Nittany Lions football team. Most notably, head coach Joe Paterno (who'd been affiliated with the Lions for 46 years) was fired - resulting in a riot amongst Penn State students (in the dubious location called 'Happy Valley').
Since the story broke out, more Nittany Lion associates became unemployed, and there's the possibility that the entire football program at the college might be scrubbed altogether.
With that in mind, I offer this little satire of the ongoing incident, with yet another well-known football team member (literally) getting his 'walking papers'... namely, the Nittany Lion mascot!

Yes, campbellkid, I did hear the news within 24 hours of my rendering of this art piece. Personally, I thought that Paterno got the 'short end of the stick' by the college, and shouldn't have been fired. But the damage was already done, and Joe's diagnosis is now a reversal of 'insult to injury'.
It's quite ironic that familiar folks who retired in 2011 (such as Andy Rooney) ended up at Death's doorstep much too soon.

now, i like Joe Pa as much as anyone else...
but...i don't think he did enough as a coach. He knew about it, and yet, He and Penn St. let Sandusky on the field with a slap on the wrist, basically saying "Just don't bring kids here anymore." Paterno, with as much power he had, could've told Sandusky to go home and don't come back...he could've gotten him fired himself...but the fact that He didn't do as much as he should've, that got him fired. Again, I loved and still do love Joe Pa, Papa Joe, Papa Lion, whatever other nicknames he has...but i think he needed to get fired. He was an assistant at Penn St before he was a coach...he's been involved with that school for more than 50 years, head coach for 46...he was a legend, he was worshiped there...but he needed to get fired, so Penn St could move on. Because, let's face it...Sandusky was a great friend of Joe Pa's, and if Joe Pa wasn't fired, they'd still be talking about this and Penn St wouldn't be able to get past this.
But that's my personal opinion on the matter...frankly, it shouldn't have happened, and Sandusky should be in jail for the rest of his life, if he did what he did.

Prof. Wagstaff: "Have we got a dorm?"
Teachers: "Yes."
Prof. Wagstaff: "Have we got a football stadium?"
Teachers: "Yes."
Prof. Wagstaff: "Well, we can't support both of them. Tomorrow, we tear down the dorm."
Teachers: "But, Professor, where will the students sleep?"
Prof. Wagstaff: "Where they always sleep... in the classroom!"
(Groucho Marx from the 1932 comedy "Horse Feathers")
