Although living in Washington, I've heard both tales of kids that get grounded for having an A-, and tales of kids that get like $50 from their parents for coming back home with even a C+.
The latter are just fucking dumb and spoiled anyway, but still. <_>
Poor Xiao. :c <3

Depending on the subject even a B was a bad grade for me although it never got to the extreme that an A- was also bad, maybe because over here we don't use the +/- average. If one gets straight A- and another gets straight A+ they will both end up with A in their report card.
Also too bad that Ginger has to do some extra heavy duty studying now with Mao on her case.

I think there was a study a few years ago that said that physical punishments stunted intelligence compared to good old 'sit-in-the-corner'. Reasoning was, basically, negative reinforcement boxes in a child's will to experiment, whereas time-outs forced reflection. Point is, no matter what, parents are human too.
It almost sounds like you support the eastern philosophy of capital punishment for less than perfect. I like western dad here, especially in the first frame. he's supportive of her. She's a kid, she doesn't need her parents putting extra stress on her. there'll be plenty of time to be stressed out as an adult. Though I do think he should perhaps at least encourage her to aim for better.
Not entirely, I don't believe in capital punishment at all, but believe that some western parents shouldn't be so lienant and barely invest their time in the child education, but be constantly involving and know when to crack the whip (figurative speaking) when the child slack off.
