This handsome gentleman is Amos, a black leopard (also known as “melanistic phase” coloration). He’s a monster of about 200lbs (91kg), but has a pretty good attitude for being a leopard. He even let me scratch his shoulder a few times, which was fine. For the most part, he was quite content to keep his distance, and just let me take his picture a bunch of times. :)
Amos is another family member at Panther Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary in Florida. He’s a really splendid example of a black leopard, as like all of his kin, he was very stand-offish, which just added all the more to that aire of mystery and mystique that all of the black cats seem to have the corner market on. :)
It was a great weekend visit, and I have a lot of fun getting to know Amos just a little. So, this is Amos, with that patented, leopard stare.
This picture was taken 24-Jun-07. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 10D and the EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens. The original was taken at full frame of 3072x2048x24b, ISO eqv 400, 1/45 shutter, f/5.6. This image was shrunken down for space conservation.

I'm currently on contract in Norfolk, but if I have something in my library, then most certainly. I try and pic images in the gallery here specifically for "reference value"; it's my "Artist Conspiracy" for Balaa. :)
But if you have anything specific, let me know, and I might have something. As far as fur, I have several leopard up-close shots (fur/spot-pattern only), and a few of Zeus that are his forehead in full-frame. I did a facial/head study of Java (tiger) a while back as well, with ears, eyes, face-ruff, everything. I have about 50,000 pix, so if you're looking for something specifically, I might have it, or something close. Just ask, and we'll go from there.

(Shasta grins) It was really hot at his home, and with most of the pix, he's got his tongue hanging out, panting. While I can certainly relate to the panting-int-the-heat thing, it was more the expression on his face that made it funny. I need to post one of those too (eventually). :)
The biggest reason why there's not any "unique" info on the black cats vice the yellow ones (either jags or leopards) is because they are not a unique sub-species of the animal; rather, they are simply a "color phase" much like various breeds of horse can be "roan" or "bay" or "dapple-grey", etc. There is also rumored to be melanistic Serval that runs around on the lava flats where the black pummice is prevalent.
In the most basic terms, all the facts and information applicable to leopards and jaguars, are /also/ applicable to the melanistic-phase animals.
If you ever decide to write your essays, definitely consider sharing them, as I for one would like to read them. :)
