Promenade/The Gnome: Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky
Promenade and The Gnome from Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky
3 minutes 58 seconds
These are the first two parts of the long set of pieces entitled Pictures at an Exhibition. It was written as a memorial to Mussorgsky's departed artist friend Viktor Hartmann. Pictures at an Exhibition is probably the best example of a musical composition wherein a visual story is told: it is a story of Mussorgsky walking through a gallery of his friend's work looking at his various paintings and sketches.
In Promenade, the portly Mussorgsky is ''roving through the exhibition, now leisurely, now briskly, in order to come close to a picture that had attracted his attention, and at times sadly, thinking of his departed friend.''
The Gnome is the first picture he sees: ''A sketch depicting a little gnome, clumsily running with crooked legs.''
Realized on Yamaha DX-100 synthesizer, effects boxes, and Tascam Porta-1 4-track tape recorder. Best listened to with headphones.

WOW! :D
Awesome work with this! ^^
I loved how you used different synthesized effects to create the different moods and timbres behind each picture! ^^
I played this back in '05 with the All-State Orchestra, and the synthesizers certainly add a creepier aspect to the parts in Gnomus! Awesomely done! :D *Hugs*

Thank you! And thank you for the +fav!

The Emerson, Lake and Palmer version was my inspiration for learning how to play and then recording these pieces. Also the symphony version by Ravel.
Yes...I certainly loosed my sound imagination on Gnomus and let it run wild! And ''creepy'' was what I was aiming for! XD

Ah! No wonder! Great band for keyboards! :D
Maurice Ravel is a great arranger and composer (modern sounding, too! :D) I'm a big fan of his works! ^^
Well, you certainly hit the target with this adaptation of the piece! You've made the gnome as creepy as it should be! You should be very proud of your imagination! lol ^^
Great work! :D *Hugs*
