Attended MFF this past weekend. I took some pics at the dance competition. I did discover how much better my photos could be when I have a bitchin powerful external flash unit.
This is
stathgar. Unfortunately, I was figuring out my flash a bit still by this point so I only got 2 decent shots even though this suit is REALLY photogenic (noticing a theme here? You want good pictures, don't be black XD). This suit looks fun and the pose/facial expression just screams "whimsey" to me XD LOVE the eyes on this suit =) Apparently this is a Lombax...though I'm not sure just what that is XD This one REALLY shows what a flash can do. More will be forthcoming as I edit them.
I used my YN560 flash to bounce off of the ~30 foot ceiling to illuminate the subjects from above (took me a few dancers to realize I needed to use the bounce technique and had enough power to do it at those distances). A good high flash power (max not needed though) with a high shutter speed and smallish aperture let me darken the background while giving the subject good illumination so that they POP out (things I figured out a few dancers later, so not on this image). Was using my 80-200mm lens on this, so you can imagine my surprise that the flash had enough power to bounce those kind of distances and achieve this much illumination in this horribly illuminated room XD

Yeah crazy deal, right? :D I encountered a similar situation years ago while shooting some fursuiters in a mall. Ceiling was like 3 storeys up, I'm like "Naahhhh, my flash'll never have enough oomph to go all the way up and all the way back down again." but I tried it anyways and holy crap, color me surprised. The 580EX has a surprising amount of reach, way more than you would -ever- expect.
Yea, I was really surprised XD First time really using a flash, so I had really no idea what these things are capable of, especially a cheapy like this one XD I hear this one is a touch less powerful than the SB-900. I was 3 steps from max power with this flash to achieve this shot with that kind of bouncing. I can't fathom how powerful that 900 is XD
From the very brief research I've done, the YN560 is actually more powerful. The guide number of the YN560 is 58m at ISO100 with the zoom head set to 105mm, whereas the SB-900 is only 49.5m at the same settings. In real-world situations tho, this difference is negligible, at approximately half a stop.
