Grand Tournament Final Round Post 3
My opponent's dodge of Ichi-gou's attempt to go for his throat: http://overworldrp.org/index.php?to.....sg3236#msg3236
Here's a few details to know about roleplay sparring: NPCs and Open/Closed/Hybrid posting styles.
Posting styles usually fall into one of those three forms: Open, Closed, or Hybrid. Open posts are posts where you state your actions, only your actions, the intent behind your actions, and what their consequences will be (example: You throw a spear at the other person, but you don't say if it hits, or even how they react to it. You're allowed to only say what your character has done and why they've done it). Closed posts are where everything is written. You can say what you do, what the other person does, who takes damage, how much, ect (example: You throw the spear, it closes the distance, slams into the chest of the other person's character because they couldn't dodge or block it in time, and they fall to the ground dead).
Closing posts are usually only used when the sparring fighters are very familiar with each-others' characters, and are just screwing around, or for critical posts, where they've been awarded permission to connect real damage on the other person by a judge, or outright victory.
Hybrid posts involve a mixing of those styles. You write small actions onto the other person, like dodging, glancing blows, dialog, etc, but the major actions that can do real harm are required to be left open.
All of that applies to main characters. Each member in a given thread is using their chosen characters. That's who the main combat involves. Sometimes supporting characters are used, and they're referred to as NPC, non-player characters. And in each forum/community there's different rules for how NPCs are to be treated in battle. Some forums say you can kill them enmasse. Some allow use of 'purchased' NPCs that have to be given more respect by the opposing players, and some allow them to be used at full comparative ability to the main characters.
There is no such provision in the Grand Tournament. The fight is meant to be between the main characters involved.
In Dirge's post he had his character's sentient sword fly at Ichi-gou's neck while he dodged Ichi's claw. I treated the sword as a powerful NPC, but still as an NPC, and promptly destroyed it, albeit with a sacrifice on Ichi's part.
