There is a default brush available in photoshop that which basically just lets you spray the grass on the picture, you can change the colour or size of it etc. I used a couple of layers for the grass too, one for the main part of the grass, one for grass that sticks up in front of the character, and one with a patch of brown for the dirt beneath it.
