Try sketching out a concept without looking at any refs and then see if you can find refs that approximate the same body parts? It takes some hunting for accurate refs after, but helps keep artwork from getting too identical to any one picture. I think it can help you understand the different anatomy a little more, too, since you can't fall into just copying the same light/shadow.
