Chapter 1
The fight to survive
Richard sat in the corner of the small bedroom of the small suburban home he holed- up in. His breathing increased with every loud bang on the door. He wasn’t specifically trained for anything, but trained with Bioweapons was not one of the things they trained him with. Umbrella had assured him that the project: Nemesis wouldn’t be killing friendlies; it was Richard's fault he accidentally shot at the thing. Now it trying to break down the door and finish the problem. Richard looked down at the clutter on the floor, hoping to find anything he could use when suddenly, a small glint of metal caught his eye. Ammo; maybe he really had a chance, he thought with a small smirk, there was always something.
Chris wiped his face with his arm quickly, then continued to fire at the ever-oncoming crowd of infected. The outbreak down at the Miami Hive had spread throughout the state, turning everyone and everything into Bioweapons. Chris had dealt with them before, sure, but with most of the police force dead there wasn’t much point in an “I told you so.”
Chris was an anthro Lucario that worked on the Miami Special Tactics Unit and Rescue Team. He had red hair with the tips of his bangs a silver that shone with the street lights and fire sprawled around the town. He was the weapons specialist on the team, with Bill, a raccoon anthro that specialized in enemy analysis; able to target weak points and ascertain attributes on any target.
Terry, a snow leopard, was a master at hacking and lock picking. She had been in jail for 2 years prior for hacking into the military network, which also got her the job. The last person in His squad, Omega, was a wolf anthro, who never talked. He had solid blue hair with dark purple bangs, and eyes that shone a similar purple. He was the one in charge of sniping and covert tactics, and he never failed a mission, ever.
Bill had gotten outnumbered while hiding out somewhere and wasn’t heard from afterward. Chris and Terry were busy clearing the street and sidewalks of shamblers, zombies people mostly called them. The team had actual codenames though, so far they had encountered Alpha and Gamma hunters, as well as plenty of shamblers. Hopefully, this street was only shamblers, instead of runners, which they guessed were evolved versions of the shamblers.
Omega, however, was on the opposite side of town. He had heard that survivors were sent to the police station to hole up, but unfortunately, he knew more about this situation than the others. His cousin was working for Umbrella at the time, and was head of a special project. They were trying to revive an old bioweapon creating virus to try and harness it for better. Something went wrong though, and Omega’s cousin, Alpha , was in the brunt of the outbreak. As if making a last stand, he had called Omega and told him everything. Plans, locations, everything that they were going to do, Omega now knew.
One of the entrances to the Hive was under the police station, in the sewers. Omega wanted answers and he was going to get them, dead or alive.
“Move up! They’re coming from behind, Terry!” Chris yelled. The gunshots and yelling was attracting more, and they were still a good halfway to the city limit. They were to go and secure the area, so that the refugees at the police station could escape, but there was always a catch. A loud, heart-crushing roar rang out, a roar of pure rage, followed by pistol shots. Terry raised her right hand above her head and pointed her second pistol toward an alleyway on the other side of the street. Chris nodded and ran over, but not before grabbing Terry. As noble as she was, two handguns weren’t going to do anything against a population of over 75,000 people and anthros.
Chris stayed at the entrance to the alleyway, keeping the shamblers out while Terry ran inside the house where the bullets were ringing out from. Before she could reach the door, it flew outward with a man, no older than 25. He immediately ran toward them and pushed past Terry.
“Run!!! It won’t ever stop!!! COME ON!”
Chris fell as the man barreled past him, shooting the zombies in his way, each making it’s mark and hitting the shamblers in their heads, killing them instantly.
“Hey, Wait!” Chris yelled running toward him. He stopped though when Terry suddenly screamed. Behind him, a towering beast in a long black, leather, outfit was holding her by her head. Terry continuously shot at the creature, the bullets doing nothing whatsoever. Chris ran toward the two and just as the monster lifted her up he threw his knife. The knife flew forward and hit the creature in the arm, causing it to roar and throw her back inside the house. The monster turned to Chris and slowly walked toward him, instilling fear with each thunderous step.
Suddenly the creature stumbled back, shot twice by what sounded like a high-power magnum. It roared again made for Chris before being shot a couple more times and falling. It groaned as it fell on it’s knees then the floor, purple blood oozing out around it. Chris ran inside the house and saw Terry against the wall, a bent piece of metal sticking out of her side. She coughed blood and smiled weakly, “Got the bastard, huh?”
“Not for long.”
Turning Chris saw the guy from earlier, this time with a suitcase. “What do you mean?”
The man walked up to Terry and examined her, “She should live, come on, we can patch her up at my place.”
With that the man carefully picked her up, wary of the jagged metal, and made for the backdoor with Chris following behind.
Omega meanwhile, had made to the police station. As he walked up to the door, he heard the gate squeak open loudly. Turning he saw a fox anthro, maybe 16, running inside, an alpha hunter right behind her. It cried out as it jumped toward her, It’s claws outstretched, making her scream. After a minute she heard it give a long, dying screech and she opened her eyes. Above her she saw the wolf, his hand outstretched toward her. He jerked his head toward the station and the girl grabbed his hand, using his help to stand up.
They quickly ran inside and Omega locked the door before anymore of the creatures could get in. Now safe, Omega looked over his newly acquired ward. She had brown hair and green eyes, and she was wearing a schoolgirl uniform, which confirmed his earlier hypothesis of her age.
She sat down on a step, “Thanks, I thought I was done for.”
Omega nodded and reloaded his sniper before shouldering it and pulling out an Uzi, in a confined space like a building, quantity beat accuracy. He then opened up his top right vest pocket and pulled out a candy bar. He held it out to the girl, “I’m Omega.” He murmured. The fox cautiously grabbed the chocolate and opened it. After sniffing it she smiled, happy it wasn’t a trick. The girl broke it in half and offered the other half to Omega, which he took gratefully.
“I’m Heather by the way-”
Before they could continue their discussion, the door was suddenly banged upon, making her jump and causing Omega to twist around. Omega quickly grabbed her wrist and pulled her wrist. They ran through the door to the infirmary and Omega quickly barricaded the door with one of the large, metal file cabinets. Satisfied with his barricade, Omega turned and examined his companion again. She was sitting on the operating table, which allowed Omega to see the faint trickle of blood rolling down the inside of her leg.
Omega quickly walked up to a cabinet and pulled out a first aid spray and some bandages. He then lifted her skirt up some which, under normal circumstances would’ve gotten him smacked or kicked, and revealed the small cut on her thigh. He quickly tended to the cut and bandaged it perfectly before pocketing both items. Heather fixed her dress awkwardly, blushing from the recent action, “T-Thanks.”
Chris sat on the floor next to Terry and the man that they had encountered. As he worked on fixing up Terry, the man explained his story.
“My name is Richard Alistair. I worked with Umbrella as one of their head researchers until a virus had leaked out and killed everyone. Unfortunately, the virus didn’t keep them dead, but reanimated them as shells of their former selves. I escaped in the nick of time and, thanks to the antivirus I’ve been carrying around with me, stayed pretty much safe.”
Chris crossed his arms, “What was that thing that attacked us in the alley?”
“The guys in charge of it named it NEMESIS, after the research project. It served two purposes, one was to see how the virus would mutate the host under immense surgical damage. The second was to create a bioweapon that could not only be controlled by remote computer to eliminate certain targets, but that could kill without stopping or hesitating, unless commanded to. I had made the unfortunate action of accidentally shooting the thing with my gun, which made me a threat that needed to be eliminated.”
“You said that it wasn’t dead, even after she shot it multiple times with a .357, how is that possible?”
Chris tore the bandage and finished patching up Terry’s side, “Nemesis was designed with a small fallback plan. Depending on the damage, the weapon would mutate continuously, not stopping ever. It is, the most powerful creature in existence.”
“If it’s being remotely controlled by someone, then couldn’t we stop it?”
“Maybe… We would need to find a way into the Hive, and then we would need to relinquish control from the self-supported computer AI in charge of this branch.”
Terry winced from the pain of her wound. She was still unconscious and the three were going to stay at their current location until she was able to walk and protect herself. Any slowing down would kill them, especially with NEMESIS out there, wherever it currently was…
Omega sat looking out the window next to the door , never moving or faltering an inch. Heather however, was asleep on the medical table behind him. She lokked so innnocent all curled up with her arms on either side of her body. She had taken off her top due to the broken air conditioner (Omega was using as part of the barricade) which revealed she was wearing a yellow bra.
Omega had no real interest in the child, he was a loner. Besides that fact, the last thing he needed to be thinking about was… that, especially in this situation. The banging on the main hall door had ceased an hour earlier, which made Omega feel less safe, but Other than the random shambler passing by the window, there was nothing. The shamblers reacted to sound so they would be fine. Feeling his exhaustion catching up to him, he slowly let his head sink, and closed his eyes.
Chris had retired to the other room with his case, the one that contained not only the virus, but the antivirus, leaving Richard with Terry. She was breathing slowly, still asleep. He looked over his G3, making sure it was still in perfect working order, they would need as much as they could grab to get to the limits. Luckily, as it turned out, one of the Hive’s entrances was near the city limits, saving them time and supplies.
As Richard looked at the sleeping snow leopard, he couldn’t help but think of Bill and Omega. Bill was notorious for getting out of tight spots, so that was a positive. Omega had probably gotten stuck with something like a child or pregnant woman. Richard chuckled at the thought of Omega being slowed like that and let himself fall asleep as well.
