People seem to think it's okay to tell a tarantula lover how much they hate spiders. They call them monsters because they are different.
Well, screw them! Clearly the spider haters just don't understand that spiders are not out to get them. They cling to the irrational idea that if it is different it is evil. I pity people that do not have the social grace to understand that it is rude to talk about killing someone's pet just because they think they are "icky".
QuickNick was also there to joke with me about how many popular animals are more evil and monstrous than spiders. So I included Bubba with Dotty.

I'd rather have a pet spider of some sort than a damned Dog any day.
Least taking care of them is cheaper and I can be sure that the damned tarantula wont tear up my house.
Maybe change the temp on the thermostat.
Probably will eat the last frozen buritto
But he won't destroy the place.

They live longer than dogs too.
Also, most apartments allow tarantulas even when they don't allow other pets, and you don't have to pay a pet deposit on them.
I know people can find them creepy, but your average person has enough decency to NOT say "if that thing gets near me I'll kill it"
Replace "it" with "dog" and usually we call them a horrible person, but somehow saying "I want your pet spider dead" is okay.

What makes it even better is that a chance that a tarantula biting you is very slim. The lil guys are as docile as a goldfish and only bite when you seriously fuck with them.
Dogs? Do I even need to bring up statistics on how many times people are attacked/bitten by them?

Depending on the tarantula. Some are more aggressive than others, but they make a big show of telling you that they are not cool with your hand being in their tank. My Ama is extremely chill and very tolerant of being handled, however, a Cobalt Blue or a Thailand Black might just bite a person if they get too close.
I know. Dogs can be very dangerous. I was pretty ticked when I saw a children's book on "dangerous animals" and it talked a lot about spiders but didn't mention that dogs will bite you. Children are far more at risk of being attacked by the dogs.

I don't know if anyone can tell me this isn't cute http://roflspiders.files.wordpress....../quagmar-2.jpg
Oh my thank you so much for including Bubba! Look at those struts.
I don't mind that people don't like spiders, it's bound to happen. But for the love of god don't go onto a picture of a persons PET spider and tell them how their "evil little monsters".
It's like going on someones page and telling about those nasty lions. Lol
I really love the feel of this picture. Bubba is super cute and smug. And Dotty is throwing off large amounts of sexy sass her self! I also love the way you colored this! Very bright, it kinda makes me think of a 80's comic book page (Which is awesome by the way) Also think you did a really good on Dotty's legs.

Had to include Bubba, it wouldn't have been complete without him.
I have a lot of friends that aren't very fond of spiders, but they are respectful, unlike some people that just don't comprehend how inappropriate it is to call my baby a monster or say "if it ever gets near me I'll kill it" (to which I usually reply "you do that, and the person who finds your body will wish they hadn't").
It's kinda brighter than the actual image here, but it still works. I was thinking about older comics when I did this, mostly because Dotty is kinda a 50's girl.

Dorry is really pretty. I need to draw her some time ;w; I love the 50's and a 50's tarantula? Come on now.
All my friends seem to have arachnophobia, but they just don't want to see my tarantula when I get one, and I would never shove it in their faces. I feel so bad when people risk their spider's well being just for a sick joke.
I mean hell think how much shit we would get if we started commenting on pictures of peoples dogs or cats "If it gets near me I'll kill it." "I thought it was a monster, and I was right" or "Is it dead yet?".
And what the heck do tarantulas do? Do they tear up your sofa? No. Do they ruin your floor by pooping or peeing on it? No. If it sneaks out of its cage, do you have to worry about it biting the the kid next door? Doubt it. (not that other pets are bad, just giving examples) Also spiders are some of the sweetest things in the world, most have little to no aggression in their DNA.

I need to draw more of her myself. 40's and 50's style is so pretty, why haven't they brought back that era of fashion?
It's cruel the way some people use their tarantula to scare people. It puts the spider at risk and it just fuels more fear. I personally think that people that do use their tarantula to torment other people should not be allowed to own one, yet sadly the ASPCA doesn't care about the abuse of arachnids.
Yeah, we would get called horrible people by everyone within commenting range.
Haha, I would love to see a tarantula try to tear up a sofa. Though Ama has done that little "kneading dough" thing with her moss. Of all the pets I've owned (birds, snakes, dogs, cats and mice) tarantulas are the easiest and cleanest pet to have. Unfortunately some of the really pretty ones are known to have a nervous disposition and can be aggressive, but they are very clear about telling the human that they are feeling threatened with a big display, so it's really hard to get bitten by a pet tarantula on accident.

Yup. Same thing with bees. Bees are going crazy and dying out, but OH MAN WE JUST GOTTA SAVE THEM WOLVES. Why? Wolves look like dogs and they're pretty. Why not bees, which hold a fundamental role in, you know, not letting plants die out? Because bees are scary and have pointy butts, oh god no.
People speak their minds without thinking all the time, unfortunately, that's the kind of world we live in. People think, well I have an opinion, and to them it makes logical sense, and without hesitation spit their minds on everyone in sight. :/
It's ok to have an opinion, everyone does, and not everyone is going to agree with it. But that doesn't mean people have to go off on other people about how they feel about that other person's opinion. :c But you dear, have every right to be upset.
I'm sorry your having to deal with that though, especially with something your so passionate about.

I'm sorry for commenting on old art, but I've been debating getting a tarantula myself because I've always adored spiders and have been thinking of it for a long time because they're significantly easier to look after compared to other pets and as someone with severe depression I just can't take care of a dog or cat the same way I can take care of a spider.
My favorite spiders are jumping spiders, but I love tarantulas too.
Any advice for a newbie?

It's all good, lovely!
The top important things for a tarantula is reasonable airflow, water, and a hide. Some people even drill holes in the lids of plastic containers for their tarantula enclosure. There's also the normal terrariums if you can afford it, it makes for a prettier display.
Different species are going to have slightly different needs, but most will do good with a tropical substrate that is designed for soaking up water to keep the tank semi moist.
Any kind of container that is big enough to fit the spider with their legs spread out can make a good hiding spot- old plastic containers laid on their side (usually cut in half or half buried) work fine, or you can get the half logs from the pet store.
Good luck in your tarantula journey, and I wish you well.
