I can't imagine ballparking it too hard if you just use simple logic when mixing it together.
Say a basic vegetable soup with carrots, celery, chicken broth, potatoes, onion and a dash of cream.
Depending on how much you want, say take 3 stalks of celery, 3 carrots, 4 potatoes, half an onion and 2 cups of chicken broth and 1 cup of water for a smaller amount. I'd need to use about 8 stalks of celery, 6 carrots, 5 potatoes, an onion, two big box things of chicken broth (maybe 6 cups) and half a cup of cream, since I have 5 people to feed + leftovers for lunches. If you just picture how big a stalk of celery or a carrot is and then add all that together in your head it makes more sense that way.
Then again, I was raised by my Southern mother.
