i went to a gallery in a museum one time in which the artist screenprinted several different emoticons onto canvases and hung them up. his artist's statement was that "you assholes won't be happy with my surreal watercolour paintings, so i drew something you might like instead." the gallery fell under harsh criticism in the arts and entertainment magazine.
