Day 1, Part 2
He responded, “No William, I don’t really know what I am”. He didn’t want to give out too much information, still being cautious.
“Well, I do believe that you are. Now don’t be discouraged when I say this, but you are some kind of monster. You seem to be a werewolf of some sort.” The creature pondered for a bit, trying to decipher what he truly was.
The facts became clear. He had fur where his skin should be, a tail and fang-like teeth, not to mention increased hearing, sight, and smell. He had to be a werewolf. “I guess so…” he said, feeling more confused. He asked himself, How can I be a werewolf? He shows a disappointment the way he looks down. William told him, “Don’t be discouraged. Here, you can borrow this.” William handed him a book about legends in monsters. “Try to find more about yourself,” William replies.
At that, they headed out towards the tennis courts. William planned to show him some of the scenery, hoping to cheer him up. The creature didn’t show the slightest interest in tennis. He noticed that the mansion was surrounded by a thick stone wall. On the top of the wall were many antenna-like machines. He wondered what they were used for.
As they passed the tennis courts, they heard someone calling them. “William, oh William.” William turned to see that it was Susan Knightwell.
“Yes Madam Knightwell, is there anything I could do for you?” William asked.
She replied, “Why yes William, my tennis string broke and I…” She then noticed him, standing there giving a confused face. “Good heavens, you must be the new one. Nice to meet you. My name is Susan Knightwell, but please call me Madam Susan,” she said. Madam Knightwell showed a young figure. She had long, blond hair wrapped by a hair band as she wiped the sweat of her head. She still had the fit and healthy figure of an actress.
There was an awkward silence as Madam Knightwell waited for his reply. William urged him to say something by bumping him on the shoulder. He replied, “It is nice to meet you too… Madam Susan.”
Susan smiled as she said, “Well, good, and I hope you do enjoy it here. Oh, William, as I was saying, can you restring my tennis racquet?”
William told her, “But madam, your husband specifically asked me to look after this young gentleman utill he knows his way around.”
“Oh William, he is old enough to find his way around, aren’t you?” Susan replied.
He said, “It’s okay, I am just going to walk around.”
“Okay, but meet me at the fountain at six o’clock,” William told him.
He replied, “Sure”.
William and Madam Susan went towards the building, leaving him alone near the tennis courts. He made sure that they were out of sight before moving. He walked towards the wall. The wall was about ten feet tall.
He tried to see if he could get a grip on the wall so he could climb it, but the moment he touched the wall, the collar around his neck shocked him with electricity. The bolts went through his body, paralyzing him.
He quickly released the wall as he fell backwards, trying to relieve his body from the shocking. When he regained his focus, he got up and walked away from the wall.
He understood that he couldn’t pass over the walled after that incident. He walked toward the pond, noticing that the wall was also there. In fact, the wall surrounded the entire grounds, thus, preventing him escape anytime soon.
He decided to sit under the shade of a tree next to the pond to clear his mind and tried to form another plan. He tried to enjoy the scenery of the pond and its environment. The pond did have an abundance of multi-colored fish. He heard them splashing around as he lay down to relax. He still mused until he was disturbed by a little girl.
She looked down directly at his eyes as he was lying down. She was young, with a beautiful short, blond hair. Her eyes were light green as she stared at his eyes.
“Hi,” she said. He waited for a few seconds and replied slowly, “Hello.”
“My name is Samantha, Samantha Knightwell. That’s spelled S-A-M-A-N-T-H-A. But you can call me Sam, that S-A-M. What’s your name?”
After a long silence, he replied, “I don’t know.”
“What!” Samantha shouted, “What do you mean you don’t know? Everybody has a name.”
“What I mean is, I don’t remember my name.”
“Oh… that’s a shame. Can I help you Mr. Wolfy? We can try to find something that will refresh your memory.”
He watched her as she ran around looking for things to help refresh his memory. He felt a sudden surge of peacefulness as he watched Sam play. He felt a familiar bond towards her.
Then he had a vision from his past. It was a small girl, around Sam’s age. Her face was blurry. She had short brown hair and resembled Sam. He saw her playing, laughing and having fun. He felt happy and peaceful to see Sam playing, as if Sam were a dear friend to him.
“Sam, what are you doing?” he asked. Sam replied, “I’m trying to find things that will help you get your memory back.” Then she found something and brought it to him. She held a rock in front of his face. “Does this remind you of anything?” she asked him.
“No Sam, but it does give me an idea,” he answered.
He took the rock from Sam’s hands and stood up. He told her, “Watch this.” He chucked the rock into the pond. It hopped over the pond as if it were floating over it. In fact, it made it on the other side of the twenty-two foot pond.
“Wow, how did you do that? You have to teach me. You have to! You have to!” she demanded.
He replied, “I don’t know how I did that. It just came to me.” Sam kept on demanding for him to teach him. She then jumped on him, and he fell over on the grass. They were both laughing and having fun when they hear another call.
“Sam, oh Sam, where are you?”
“Over here,” Sam called out. She jumps off of him and runs toward the voice.
“Oh Sam, there you are. It’s almost time for your piano lessons.”
“Sorry Sis, but I was playing with Mr. Wolfy.”
“Oh really, Mr. Wolfy, well lets go…”
She looked at him, observing him. She gave an interesting face as she wondered what to say. “Hi, you must be the new guy. I’m Jennifer, but please, call me Jen. What’s your name?”
“He doesn’t remember his name, but I call him Mr. Wolfy” Sam told her.
“Well, thank you for watching my sister. She can be quite a handful.” Jen told him.
He replied, “No problem, I enjoy her company.”
“Well, we better be off. See ya later,” said Jen. “Bye Mr. Wolfy,” Sam replied. He just sat there until they headed inside.
He then heard the clock tower ring. It rang six times when he suddenly realized that it was six o’clock. He was supposed to meet William. He got up and rushed over towards the fountain.
By the time he got to the fountain, William was already waiting for him. “You’re late. What took you so long?” William asked.
He replied, “I was at the pond, playing with Samantha.” “Oh, well, that’s good that you’re making new friends here, but there is no time to waste. Follow me,” William demanded.
He followed William to his room. “You are about to meet Master Aaron and his family before dinner. This means you must present yourself as a gentleman. We need to get you dressed up,” William told him. They got into his room and at once, William told him that he needed to change his clothes. He started taking off his shirt as William handed him his tuxedo jacket. He put it on, feeling awkward wearing the tuxedo jacket. The jacket went down to his knees. He was given a bow tie; however, William had to teach him how to wear it. Next, they got him detachable wrist and ankle cufflinks. They were white and completed the finishing touches to his tuxedo.
“Do I have to wear this? I mean, is all of this really necessary?” he asked William.
William replied, “Why yes, you will need to wear this everyday on your work days.”
The werewolf showed a disappointed look. The hardest part of his transformation was his unruly fur. They had to use a whole bottle of gel to get it neat and sleek. After a half hour, he was completely ready.
They headed out to the courtyard, then headed to the northern building where the master’s family was waiting for them. As the creature entered the north building, he had to stop and stare in amazement at the magnificent structure of the building.
The moment he stepped in, he was in the ball room. It was huge, with many windows to view the outside environment. There was a massive staircase that spitted in the middle of the ball room. Up top was a gigantic chandler formed with many diamond-like objects.
They headed towards the staircase and up to the fourth floor. The first two floors were used by the ball room, and the third floor had the guest rooms. The fourth and fifth floors contained the families’ bedrooms and the master’s studies.
William led him to the middle door in that hallway. They entered to find that the Knightwell family was already there. That was the master’s study. It was quite big with the left side of the wall containing endless books on shelves. The right side had a fireplace with and a portrait of the family. The center showcased a big red carpet that led to the master’s desk. The Knightwell family was waiting there.
The Knightwell family—Aaron, Susan, Jennifer, and Samantha—were waiting at the top. They were all dressed up, similar to someone’s Sunday best. They were in a discussion until the arrival of William and the werewolf interrupted their conversation.
“Ah, welcome. I hope you had a good time so far here in my mansion. We were just talking about you. It seems that you already meet them throughout the day,” Master Aaron said.
He was silent until William had to, once again, urge him to speak by bumping him. He replied, “Yes… Master Aaron, I have met your family.”
“Well, it’s good to finally hear your voice. You seem to be quite an intelligent young man. Now, the first thing we must do is find you a good name. My daughter Samantha was telling me that you don’t remember it. Is that true?”
He nodded in agreement. Master Aaron continued, “Well, that’s a shame… Now let me see. What would be a good name for you? How about Jacob? No… that won’t do…”
Samantha yelled out, “His name is Mr. Wolfy.”
“Now Sam, we can’t call him Mr. Wolfy. We have to think of a better name than that. I think Marcus sounds good.” Jen replied.
Madam Susan suggested, “My brother’s name is Ben, and so how about Benjamin. That has a good ring to it.”
“Benjamin…Benjamin… now that does have a good ring to it. Benjamin it is,” said Master Aaron.
So his name was, from then and thereafter, Benjamin. Benjamin looked a disappointed. He wanted to find his true name as well as his memories. He didn’t want to live in this world with a false name. He hoped that Master Aaron would give him his real name as well as information about his past.
“Benjamin, now I do hope you realize what you are. You are a werewolf. Yet the oddest part is, werewolves are supposed to transform only at a full moon and turn back to human when the sun comes out. You, on the other hand, are a werewolf for when it is both day and night. That’s a good mystery. Oh well,” Master Aaron said.
Madam Susan added, “Benjamin, do you know why your hear?” Benjamin shook his head.
“Well, you are here to serve us. That mean, you have to do what we tell you to and help us when you are needed. You must show the proper manners of a find gentleman. Now, William, please take the family to the dining room. I need a moment with Benjamin,” Master Aaron said.
William answered, “Yes Master Knightwell.” At that, William led Susan, Samantha, and Jennifer to the dining room for dinner, leaving Master Aaron by himself with Benjamin. Benjamin was quite curious as to why Master Aaron wanted to speak with him privately.
“Now, Benjamin, do you remember anything, anything from your past?” Master Aaron asked.
Benjamin answered cautiously, “No, nothing at all.”
Master Aaron told him, “Well, then that is it. Do you really know why you are here? Why you are at some strange mansion, forced to do all of this? You are a new form of security. As you already know, I work with many important people and their safety is a top priority. Your job is to defend them. You have an amazing ability: increased strength, hearing, sight and smell; quick reflexes and agility to be able to dodge bullets. Throughout the week, you will be given random incidents for which you must protect the family: poison, assassins, and everything you can think of. There are cameras everywhere monitoring your movements. You’ve already found out today that escape is impossible. If you refuse of fail to save us…well.”
He took out a small remote and pressed a button. All of a sudden, the collar shocked him. This time, it was more powerful. He yelled in pain as he fell to the floor. He could feel the electricity rushing through his body, giving him the feeling that he was about to die. All of a sudden, it stopped, leaving Benjamin still on the floor, feeling the symptoms of his electrocution.
“The voltage will increase the more it is used,” Master Aaron said. “However, you can’t die that easily, and so there is no worry about dying out on me. We are done here. Now go to the dining room and eat your dinner. Sleep well, for you will start working tomorrow.”
Benjamin, trying his best to stand up, walked out of the room and onwards toward the dining room. He obeyed, for he didn’t wanted to feel the pain of the electric collar, especially after that last shock nearly killed him. He stumbled down the stairs and headed toward the dining room.
He entered the servants’ dining room and right away, all of the servants stared at him and offered different opinions about him. He was able to hear them, spreading rumors around one another.
He noticed that William had already prepared his dinner. He sat down next to William. As he was about to eat, everyone watched in amazement. They wanted to see how a werewolf could possibly be tamed and trained.
Benjamin ate his dinner as fast as he could without attracting any attention. This included one steak with mixed vegetables, corn-on-the-cob, a slice of homemade apple pie, and two cans of soda.
He didn’t speak a single word throughout his dinner. He then left the dining room and headed toward his bedroom. He took off the annoying suit and changed into a T-shirt. He lay in his bed as he shut his eyes and tried to dream relaxing thoughts to clear his mind.
Later that evening, Master Aaron was in his study. When there were no signs of anyone else there, Master Aaron went toward his desk. He opened the drawers on his desk and lifted up an old green book. He pressed a red button contained inside the book. A row of book shelves opened, leading to a secret room. Out came Mr. Magus.
“I hope you found everything quite satisfying,” Master Aaron said.
Mr. Magus replied, “Oh yes, I find everything satisfying. He seems to have completely lost his memory.”
Master Aaron asked, “Why is his memory such a big deal?”
“Well, within his memories lie events, both joyful and tragic. However, within those memories lie an even greater power, a power that will determine the fate of the world,” Mr. Magus told him.
“I see, well, he seemed to be under control,” replied Master Aaron.
Mr. Magus returned, “For now Aaron, for now”.
