Chapter 12
Carla showed Dashed, what a strange name, around the town and couldn’t stop thinking about how lucky she was; it would be dangerous beyond belief to travel alone in the wasteland and now she has someone who has done it for years. Not only will she be safer if an emergency strikes she will have someone who knows what to do during one. They small talked as they climbed the hill to her house.
“So how long have you been here,” Dashed asked obviously nervous despite spending the last few hours with her
“Oh, I’ve been here for at least two years, maybe more.” She replied in truth she had been here for a little longer but no need to get into specifics, “Anyway we should head in for the night, I had a whole dinner planned for the first person to contact me, but I don’t have cake, I was running low on supplies so I only have ground beef from some wandering cow so it’s burgers without bread.”
It’s true she had been preparing for someone to arrive for years but, know that she finally found him she didn’t know exactly what she was going to do. Dashed was handsome, either that or her standards have dropped from not seeing another walking being for awhile, but she was more focused on his survival skills then his… anatomy.
“Carla?”
“Yes?”
“Did I hear the phrase ‘we only have burgers’ come out of your mouth?”
Now she was pissed, years in the wasteland and this little punk comes here and starts criticizing her and her food selection! He’s been in ht wasteland for years doesn’t he know how hard it is to get good food out here?
“You know what, fuck you. What were you before the bombs? Some kind of rich kid with a butler?!?”
“Nononono you misunderstand me, I’ve been living off of canned foods for several years and you tell me you ONLY have burgers? That’s like saying I only have a working helicopter with gas.”
Now Carla felt a little ashamed, her was this poor soul how had been wandering in the wasteland for god knows how long and the first person he meets is acting like a complete bitch.
“Heh, sorry about that I just hated the people that thought that girls were only for cooking and cleaning, not surprising given my background,…ah here we are.”
They reached her house, she forgot to turn off one light, that’s going to cost her some time on the bike generator. That didn’t stop Dashed and his pet fox, Oliver or something like that, from getting all excited. The fox chased after the squirrel that she had pointed her gun at this morning. He opened the door and hoped that Dashed would like it here, the place was kind of a mess and she had even prepared a cake every week just in case but just yesterday she ate it! In fact tomorrow was supposed to be her fresh food gathering day, the only thing she had left were some ground beef from a passing cow and a meat grinder newly found unscathed in an old butcher’s shop, she hoped that would be enough.
“Hey Carla?” she heard Dashed ask nervously, “can I ask you a question?”
“What was this?” she thought to herself, “High School?”
“No,” she replied
“Oh, ok,” replied Dashed
“Man! This guy is dense,” she thought, “Of course you can I’m just messing with you, god you’re gullible.”
Oh, ok,” Dashed nervously said, “anyways, did it hurt?”
“SHIT!” she thought and put her hand to her side, “I thought that healed, how was he able to see that?!?”
Out loud she said, “What do you mean?”
“You know when you fell from heaven because you must be a guardian angel or something!” was his stupid reply; relief washed over her as she realized just how irrational she was being. To cover up for this she decided to say, “Very funny, now you don’t get a dessert of nutela and crackers.”
She got to the door and slowly opened the door to Dashed first real home in a very long time, there was no need to lock the door however being that the crime rate is at an all time level of zero due to obvious factors. She put her shotgun by the corner and went into the kitchen to prepare the breadless burgers. She looked over and saw Dashed gaping over her gun collection.
To comfort him she said, “Don’t worry they don’t bite and every five days I clean them.”
It was true, she always kept great care of her equipment.
“They’re nice,” he said
She took out the beef from cold storage and started preparing it.
“I think I’ll stick with my 9mm, with that I think I could actually hit something.”
She could understand that rule number one with guns: only use the ones you can use.
“Your choice, anyways do you want to help me out here? I need some help with the burgers.”
She really didn’t need the help but, if she was going to survive she is going to need to know everything about survival out there. There were so many questions she wanted to ask him, number one is how he didn’t go insane. She opened the sliding door and turned the grill on; she was down to her last can of propane and she was really going to miss grilled food and she could never use a charcoal grill for some reason. She put the burgers on the grill and heard the satisfying grilling sound.
“Where is he?” Carla thought out loud, “Hey Dashed can you help me with the burgers?”
“I’ll be right there,” he said a second later.
She looked back, god he was cute, she didn’t know what it was about him, his fur was rough , his tail was stained, and his ears weren’t that perky, but god was he good looking. If she had to guess she would say it was his walk, his posture, just something about the way he moved that was extremely appealing to her, if this was any other time she would have asked him out. She never got exactly why the guys had to ask the girls, it seemed stupid to her, if she wants someone it should be her right to go up to him and tell him, “hey, want to see a movie?” anyways she wasn’t getting anywhere with this stupid discussion in her head; point is, she doesn’t have the time for something like this.
“Bout time you showed up,” she said when Dashed closed the sliding door.
“Nah, they’ll be fine but I wanted to ask you a question.” She answered
“Sure anything”
At this point Carla wasn’t sure if she was going to pull him in and kiss him or slap him, so many things were going through her head; finally with a mental sigh of disappointment she brought herself to say, “How did you deal with it”
“There,” she thought, “That could go anyway he wants from loneliness, to the mental stress, to basic survival” she took a deep breath and waited for his answer, but when she looked over dashed look confused as if he didn’t know what she was asking. To combat this she said, “I’ve always wondered how I would be able to survive without all the supplies I have access to right now.”
“Oh!” Dashed exclaimed, “Ya that, um I guess I never really thought about it, travel during the spring and summer; once autumn came around I always gathered up for the winter and bunkered down during all the cold months.”
“That simple huh?”
“Not really but there are countless little habits you develop while traveling.”
She was a little disappointed, if it was that easy why didn’t she try to ever leave? “That’s because you were waiting for him,” her inner voice said.
She kept on asking him more questions about basic survival, every single answer made her feel more and more like an idiot. To Carla though, Dashed was just a way to survive, despite his looks she was not going to risk compromising herself with a baby no matter how desperate she got. They sat down to dinner and they ate in silence, Carla figured that Dashed would like some quite after her interrogation. Carla looked towards the couch and saw the four-legged fox laying there and wondered just how Dashed got her. She looked up and saw Dashed with an empty plate and decided to say, “So what’s your story?”
It took a minute but Dashed finally answered with, “Huh?”
“I want to know just what happened, I want to know how the Disaster was for you, why did you decide to travel, did you know anyone who survived, and where did you get that fox?”
