Gem stood there, teetering between being on her paws and being on her freshly padded behind. She didn't understand what was different but she knew for a fact something certainly was. It was almost bedtime and the usual routine involved being put into her pajamas and then being allowed a 15 minute quiet time, to wind down, have a warm bottle of milk, a bedtime story before she was placed in her cot, usually already half asleep.
The routine had been the same tonight so far, except when her mama put her pajamas on, instead of being put in the usual crinkly plastic diapers that she always wore, her mama had done something odd with some towels and pins and stuff, and then some crinkly plasticy things had gone on over the top. Gem had thought nothing of it. Her mama always knew best and Gem trusted her completely. But when Gem had been plucked off the changing table and lowered carefully to the nursery carpet Gem has squeaked in surprise at suddenly how much trickier it was to toddle. Something odd was making her legs more difficult to use and she couldnt move quite as easily as she had done before. She squidged a paw into her tummy, confused as to why there was so much more padding than usual.
Her ears drooped as she looked up at her Mama. Seeing such a forlorn expression of her baby, Gems mama just burst into laughter.
"It's okay sweetie, mama ran out of diapers so you'll have to wear these until tomorrow when we go to the shops"
Gem continued to poke at the excess padding, not really all that fussed now that she knew it wasn't her losing her toddling skills and actually quite enjoying the noise that her new underwear was making

I must admit I much prefer cloth nappies. yep yep. If theres something that puts me instantly in little baby headspace its talcum powder and cloth nappies. I dont wear them very much as they're not actually that convenient, but as a real kid I was in cloth, I guess thats why they make me feel little when I wear them these days.
