fortunately the head gasket didn't crack...this could easily have destroyed the engine. instead i just lay down a nice little smokescreen and had it flat-bedded back to the service station >_<

Actually.... I will give you professional shepherd mechanic advice.
Your engine will be fine. Despite being so over filled, it will be just fine. What usually happens when the oil becomes over filled so badly, is the rod rods start churning it up and it gets full of air, which causes it to not work right and the engine will lock up or something. Bearing damage, the like. If you only drove it a little you will be fine.
Over filling the oil won't crack the head, or blow the head gasket. That is a wives tail.
It is bad, yes, will this shorten the life of your car? Nope.
