And How Do We Begin To Covet?
"...And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet?..."
-Hannibal Lecter to Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs
Commission for cerberusderozier of her handsome Staffordshire Terrier character as Hannibal Lecter and Wielder as Clarice Starling. I really REALLY loved doing this one, and was thrilled beyond description when Cerby told me the idea for it. Being a Hannibal fan myself, I was beyond stoked to be able to do this piece. Okay okay, all the gushing aside...this is a combination of scenes from Hannibal the book and the film. The card in the flower arrangement in the foreground reads "Clarice, you are the answer to Samson's riddle. You are the honey in the lion" which is from some correspondence he sent to Clarice while he was in Italy. The main part of the scene is more from the film, but the setting was altered a bit to make it match with some of the imagery from the book. Yay for dark romance! Hey, don't look at me like that...Hannibal will always be my old man crush...
Done with copic markers, india ink, colored pencil, acrylic paint, and micron inks on bristol board.

That should be a decent definition. Silence of the Lambs has a "cult" following, so therefore, it earns the definition of being a "cult classic" or "cult film".

Did you really just come on here to cause a stink and play the part of the Devil's Advocate? Guess what, some people don't read a single book in their entire lives so it's fair to assume that not everyone who knows who the hell Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling are have read the books. In fact, it's also safe to assume that most of the people who DO know the characters and the basic storyline got that information from movies since it takes less effort to watch a movie than it does to read a book. Quit being rude to Nara. I don't know if you give a crap or not, but there's always room on my blocklist for you.
Unless it contains robed madmen sacrificing children and housepets to try to summon dark elder gods into our world, not realizing that they'll be the first people said gods will eat when that get here, I would not consider a movie to be a "cult film." Either movies go all the way or go back to sleeping with a plush Cthulhu in their jammies.
Apologies, I figured humor would be an acceptable response to this debate.

You've really blown me away with this one. I can really tell that you made use of foreground vs. background with the letter and flowers with candles on the table, and Wielder and Hannibal behind. I like how the window juxtaposes them.
I wish I could just eat the scenery. It's so beautifully colored, especially the curtain blowing in the wind, the books and cabinets, the sheen to the fridge... The only thing that looks kind of strange is maybe the flames in the candles. They're... spikey? I do like how you did a subtle glow with them though.
I could just stare out that window into the sky forever! It looks so peaceful. And Wielder looks like a total babe in that dress <3
I still have Hannibal, Red Dragon, and the Silence of the Lambs sitting on my shelf waiting to be read from when my friend gifted them to me, haha. I'll need to crack them open sometime.

Yeah, I liked the original sketch, but I felt that something really needed to be right in your face in the foreground. Thankfully, Cerby was patient with my fickle mind with this one, lol! I like the flowers. Adds some sort of surreal quality to it, I think.
The flames are strange. I tried something different with them, and that is how they looked in my reference, but I think the spiky part should have maybe been more transparent if I was going to do that at all. Oh well, lesson learned. This background was challenging. I'm not used to doing interior spaces, but I'm trying to get better with them.
Wielder in a dress? Perish the thought! I'll admit, I kinda like her in the dress too. Besides, I'd wear anything for Hannibal *swoons*.
They are amazing books. You'll love them!

Hnnnggggh he's so handsome! *drools all over the place* I'm so totally digging the age difference. And the shading here is amazing! That fridge looks so realistic (yeah wtf Im looking at the fridge in a piece like this) This became so much different than what I saw inside my head when I saw the sketch. The only thing that bothers me are the candles, the flames look quite "solid" if you know what I mean but that's just me being an asshole as usual. I cant do decent flames with markers myself, I always make them with acrylics even if everything else would be non-acrylic.
Girl, we totally need to have a chick fight over Hannibal!Cerby. I totally squeeeeed when Cerby started drawing the Hannibal!Cerby stuff, and I damn near fainted when she asked me to do these commissions for her. Gah, fangirled allllll over the damn place. I agree that Cerby's character DEFINITELY makes a very fine, handsome, and dapper Hannibal. I don't think I'd ever be able to draw a different version of Hannibal just because she did such a good job with it. Ah well, hopefully she won't have a problem with me stealing the handsome staffie for future fangirling.
Nara, you aren't being an asshole at all. I appreciate honest commentary, and, in the future, I'm definitely going to break down and try a different method on flames. I know I've been pretty successful with india ink washes before, but I guess I was too much of a chicken to try them out on this piece. Acrylics are a good idea too though...maybe I can do a personal piece that would let me work with that a bit. Thanks for the idea!

I always use mixed media on everything. Im simply not able to make a drawing using only one medium (okay I am but that would be sooo annoying). So usually I use colour pencils and Copics for characters and most of the background, then acrylics for liquids like blood or water, fire and sometimes sky. And if I go mental I put in some Oil Pastels and maybe digital crap. Damn Im so un-organised. : (
I'm sooooo stoked that Hannibal is a Staffie! I love them! I'm such a molosser nerd. Dont you just LOVE to draw those sleek but muscular faces? Okay sorry I'm dog-nerding again.

Oil pastels? You ARE a helluva lot braver than I am. I can't remember the last time a teacher dragged me kicking and screaming into doing something with oil pastels. I do use acrylics, colored pencils, gel pens, and india ink washes with the marker stuff sometimes. I need to play more with it though. Whatever you do with your work, it works, girl. I get all kinds of happy when you upload.
Oh God, did Cerby ever do a good job with Hannibal! I think a staffie definitely works for him. I do love their unique faces. My grandfather's dog, Malley, is a pit bull/lab mix....imagine a mainly black pibble with the thicker lab coat and you've got yourself a Malley. She's so damn adorable...dat smiley face, fat forehead wiff wrinkles, and jowls I pull on and make her make faces with. Thank God that freakin' dog is so gentle or she'd rip my arm off for aggravating the shit out of her.

I tell you, Wielder, you never cease to amaze. Pieces like this are why I follow your work. (Well, that and the Star Wars fan shenanigans...)
The lighting is what makes this one, I think. It's dark, in both senses of the word, and the candles just add a bit more spooky atmosphere...or romantic, depending on how you look at it. Nice job capturing the flickering light they're casting.
Honestly, I've looked, and I can't find anything to critique. I'd say you nailed it.
As always, keep up the great work.
And darn it, I really have to watch the Hannibal films now!

Awww, thank you so much! I'm glad you like my stuff and my SW shenanigans...which I shall have more of soon. Damn hard drive on my desktop gave out a week ago, so I'm waiting on a replacement before I load photoshop back onto something.
The lighting is definitely something that Thomas Harris described so beautifully in the book, and it certainly added to that dangerous, surreal, dark romance of the scene. Cerby and I both love the series and really loved the idea of combining the scenes. I'm glad that it came out this well!
Thanks so much, Jace! Always look forward to your comments!
