“…And the way Charmandra handled Nicole in the hallway—” René was discussing excitedly to Rahne, Romano, and Sam. “It was great!”
“Look, as keen as I am on seeing that uptight bitch getting knocked down a few pegs,” Romano sighed. “I really don’t need a play by play commentary especially since we were ALL there!”
“It’s just cool is all.” René mumbled, discouraged.
“What do you think Felideuce is gonna do?” Sam asked.
“Oh he just got bent out of shape because it was an unsanctioned fight in the hall.” Romano dismissed it. “I doubt we’ll hear anything about it again.”
“Um, I’m not so sure.” Rahne said as she pointed to a flyer on the wall. As the Turqs crowded around they saw that the flyer announced that due a “very violent unregistered and unsupervised fight” in the halls of the Academy, Principle Feliduce has issued a school wide exam that fosters teamwork as well as practicing combat skills. The rationale was to provide a little activity for the students in order to keep them focused on their work so they won’t have any repeat performances of the hallway fight between Charmandra and Nicole.
“Hey, there’s a listing of the teams.” Sam noticed as she looked at a bulletin board. Tracing her claw-like finger down Sam found Team Turquoise on the list and their would-be opponents: Team 16.
“Who’re they?” Romano asked. The Poke-Combat Academy was a large school. Keep track of every team was a tall order.
“I’ll find out.” Sam promised. Being the only real scrapper—that is, someone who enjoyed battling for battling’s own sake—Sam was the logical choice to find out who Team 16 was fastest.
“So I guess this means extra training sessions for us.” René said in a not-very confidant tone. Being team leader was never something he wanted or liked. “So why don’t we get together later today and—”
“Doctor’s appointment. Sorry.” Romano answered quickly before skipping off.
“Sorry, I’ve got to cover an extra shift at work.” Rahne said as she too departed. René sighed.
“Sometimes I get the feeling that no one listens to me Sam. Sam?” He turned around. The tall scyther gal was long gone. “Great.”

Sam must’ve done something right in a past life…what she couldn’t possibly imagine, but she still managed to luck out: No sooner had she entered the school’s practice arenas than she found Team 16 practicing against another team, Team Nocturne. Sam sat down and watched. Not so much to learn to scout out the opposition, the techniques and moves, and the like but to gage what type of people they were. Sam had the uncanny ability—she attributed it to being a fighting type—to learn about and communicate with someone through fighting with them or watching them fight. It was better than talking and almost as efficient as telepathy. Whatever it was, Sam had it and used it as she watched the four fighters of Team 16: Team leader Emily Mentel, an Abra; Sexton Flint, a Ditto, and the twins, Nicolas and Nicole Zune, brother and sister Nidorans.
Sam sat and observed in silence. While they were all interesting in their own way, she was particularly interested in Nicole; watching with a raised brow as she used fury swipe on the Nocturne Zubat, Zeke Kroo—who didn’t seem to be paying attention until his face started getting pounded in. Emily smiled at something. Sexton glared at her. Sam didn’t know what that was about and wasn’t really interested, she was busy watching Nicole.
She was clearly a talented fighter and scrapper, like to mix it up, up close and personal so clearly she was very bold…she obviously had a great control of her body, which indicated a great lot of training and preparation. Nicole was also attractive—Sam acknowledged it despite not being interested—but seemed too…what was the word? Oh yes, tomboyish. She was almost a mirror image of René.
The corner of her mouth curled upwards in a smile as an idea occurred to Sam. Nicole would be perfect. Sam decided, indeed she would. Now the only thing to do was put the proper things in motion…
