ohh, well, the COM-8A or B aluminum frame from the R2 builder is rather pricy (600-1000$ depending on the option you want) so, the other alternative was Wood :P M. Sienna had quite an extensive and awesome tutorial on how to make it :D
Soo big question, is it motorized (remote controlled) or simple display ? and if it is, Does it do the "2-3-2" ( builder's nightmare, trust me >.> )
still, very neat look you gave it :D

This guy also has an aluminum/wood frame layout inside to help him do the 2-3-2 he will also be full remote controlled in the new year (atm he just has temp castors in the feet)...he can go 2-3-2 now but i'm going to upgrade the one linear actuators to a stronger one too. Also the brain i plan to install will give him a personality too :)
sound fun.
only thing i would massively suggest: do not get the electronic out of a small hasbro R2 toy to put it in a full size droid.
reason: a 1/2 pound droid bumping into something or somebody does no damage, a 100pounds+ going 'nuts' and bumping into people (or kids if you attends conventions) could be really bad.
And, if you're planning 2-3-2 later on, make sure to keep room in the 'belly' of the beast. I'm saying this since, many puts a big fattie Sealled Acid battery in there (Car battery, helps with balance the center of gravity and last for a while. plus, it's cheap). As alternatives, if you got money, you could aim for some LiPo (lithium polymer, Slightly costy but WAY better for energy if you compare weight/power. they are very small and hold lots of juice. Down side, if not charged properly, they caught fire x.x).
ok, i shut up with my advices :3 it's just that i've done Lots and lots and lots of research on how to build mine already and that was one of the many thing that did bit me in the @$$ >.> but if you need any info, feel free to poke me. i'd be more than happy to help :]

heheh....actually do plan to use the electronic toy for the droid but just to power the neck and sounds ect..i dont think i will let him be a "free range droid" unless i have a kill switch over to the remotes.
As far as power i'm not to worried because i still have plenty of room for such things.
btw do you have links to the droid you want to build?..cant seem to find any

heh, well, best is to start with a RC'd droid and save the potential super awesome 'sentinent' droid for later :]
i'm advising because of the center foot that have to come inside the middle when it's in "2" position ... that literally eats up alot of space >.<
and which droid you're refering about? the MSE-6 ? the others R-series astromechs ? or my personal one that i'm planning? (and btw, it's a R6, just mistyped that in my first post >.> silly me.)

heh, here's the color scheme of the one i wanted to make. link . I decided to startmaking one after going at Celebration 5 >.< met a bunch of people from the R2 builder club there, it was awesome. But sadly, had to put the Astromech project on hold for various reason but i had started to make the "massive" protocol for my remote control "add-on" to be able to control the functionalities of the droid. (the remote thumbs would have been only for controlling the movement. All the bells and whistles would have been controlled by the said addon. Oh and, it's pretty much Electronic geek stuff on my blog >.< You'll also see the progress/design i have for that add on if you check for the CoBS section. Yet again, geeky stuff >.<
