Souffle's Surprise - with story
Unka souff told me I should join twitter so i did (well i randomly discovered i had made an account months ago and then completely forgot about it cause I didnt know how to use it toddlergurl is my username if anyone is interested)
Anyway....when I logged in today I noticed in the main news bit that it said it was national cupcake day, and that combined with the fact my Unka has been having a tough time recently and teh fact he is awesome at cooking gave me inspiration for this picture....as always with family pics, there's a little story to go with it.

Souffle tiptoed into Gem's nursery, he was looking after the little squirrel for the weekend and she had been on her best behaviour all afternoon. He had made some cupcakes whilst she had been having her mid afternoon nap. He didn't know if Gem had ever had cupcakes before. He knew she liked pancakes and well, pretty much anything he made her so he was quietly confident that she would like these too.
"Squeaker. look what I've got!" He said in a happy sing songy way reserved for small children. Gems ears perked up and she looked round at her Uncle, a large smile appearing from behind her pacifier, which quickly vanished when she noticed the plate of baked things her uncle was carrying. Her eyes widened in wonderment.
"Wassat?" She asked, her head cocked to one side so that her hair flopped into her large blue eyes.
"Cupcakes. they're for specially well behaved little squirrels. Do you know any?" Souffle asked teasing his little neice a bit.
Gem shook her head slowly, almost sleepily from side to side, her gaze never leaving the cakes, it was as if she were hypnotised or lost deep in thought. Souffle chuckled.
"I think maybe you might have been specially good today, don't you?"
Gem shot a quick glance up at her uncle as he grinned down at her. She looked confused then gave him a shy smile behind her pacifier.
"Me. imma good girl"
Souffle nodded, glad she was finally understanding.
"So would you like a cupcake?"
Gem nodded vigourously loud mumbles of "peease, yes fankyooo peease" thrown in for good measure, causing her uncle to openly laugh as he got down on one knee and offered her the plate so that she could pick a cupcake.
Gem got up close to the plate, her eyes almost as big as the plate itself as with hushed reverie she dropped grub unceremoniously onto the floor and put both paws around the biggest of the three cupcakes.
"Errr, squeaker, maybe take a smaller one, that one is almost the size of your head"
Gem wasn't listening, she was looking at the icing and the little sprinkles on the top.
"pwetty" she whispered.
Souffle knelt there for a moment Gem seemed frozen as she just stared at the treat.
"Gem, you can eat it, if you want"
Gem's nose twitched, sniffing the sponge but she didn't make a move to eat it, she couldn't understand why anyone would want to eat something so pretty, she decided she was going to keep it.
Souffle watched his little neice for a little while longer as she continued to quietly contemplate the cupcake, Gemma certainly was a strange baby girl, but he loved her nonetheless.

OK so I am going to say what I said to myself when I read this and then looked at the picture (yes I read the story first) ...
oh gosh, this is so so SO adorable!
I know how Gem feels in this story ... sometimes it is hard to eat something so pretty. But then it was made to be eaten, and if I don't eat it, it might go bad, and then it will go to waste, so that's when my grownup side saves me :)

The last part reminds me of my baby cousin's first birthday. They made him this nice cake with a big frosting top just perfect for smashing into and he just stared at the thing for awhile with no idea what to do with it. We think maybe he was nervous at having just a large audience. Eventually his parents showed him what he was "supposed" to do.
