"As the sun sank into the horizon, the battle waged on just as fierce as it was when the dawn broke. Laser fire cracked the air, and railguns boomed in the distance. Makks Reflected for a breif moment about how he could have gotten himself in this situation, separated from his squad, and pinned under a torrent of enemy fire. It's not like he hadn't been in this situation before, but it always scared him a little more than he cared to admit.
Steeling his resolve, Makks hoisted his laser cannon, and pulled the trigger, immobilizing a hovertank. The squad around it breifly ducked, then returned fire. Makks pulled his sidearm, linked to the port in his arm, drawing from the batteries deep under his skin, and swept the beam across the enemy position, bellowing obscenities in raw defiance of fate. He wasn't going to die here. This was not going to be his final stand"
Man, I had to have redrawn this pic more than any other picture in my gallery. SO MANY false starts. Could never get it looking right in the sketch or inking stage. And colouring it took a solid week of small restarts as opposed to the one or two sittings it usually takes for me to colour a pic. It's almost as if this pic did not want to get done EVER. Thank goodness I'm stubborn to a fault.
Also, before anyone says anything, I'm perfectly aware that RL laser weapons would likely be on the infrared wavelength and thus, invisible, and even visible wavelengths would be dim when viewed from any angle but the target, but I put a bright beam in there for artistic purposes. It wouldn't be nearly as impressive if he was screaming and there was no beam, plus it makes a great lightsource.

I'm not that much of a jerk! XD
But yeah, smoke effects yanked outta deviantart's photoshop brushes section. I know how to do the smoke manually with default brushes and the smudge tool, but the smoke brushes save a lot of time. Plus, ya gotta have a little knowhow to use them just right anyways, so I don't really consider it cheating. I honestly encourage others to make use of the tools they have

My friend, trust me on this: I have a friend who criticizes minor niggling little technical points like that (and other "unrealities") on aregular basis, up to and including not liking it when RPGs (tabletop dice and paper ones) describe beam weapons as visible, ESPECIALLY anything anti-vehicle and anti-ship (Deep X-ray/gamma ray frequencies only, thank you very much). Said same person would, can, and has griped about the energy storage density needed to successfully use beam weapons tech in general.
Hot damn...the coloring work and shading details look amazing in this pic, especially for the sunset lighting effects on the rubbery texture of the doberman character's skin. The smaller and precise lineart for the design of the weapons being used here (particularly the laser gun and the smoke effects) looks incredible as well. Really liking the action-packed sci-fi theme going on for this pic; sorry to hear that it took you a lot of time in getting it to look right, but I'm glad you were able to get it drawn and colored to a point that it looked satisfactory. I think it came out very well overall! :)
DAM that is ONE epic BFG!!!!!
but i bet it was Nerfed & Duse as much damage as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-SmfybCbsY ^w^

Actually I wasn't going to say that the laser would be invisible, it's entirely possible for the beam to be in the visible spectrum, what I was going to say is that without any eye protection the backscatter off of crap in the air would blind him.
And I don’t mean “I shouldn’t have looked at that camera flash” blind, mean “OH GOD MY PRECIOUS RETINAS!” blind.
Proper eye protection is critical.
