I know I wasn't the only one thinking this during that scene.
BTW, is "Hearth's Warming Eve" the first Christmas special that doesn't mention the word Christmas?

Well that's what Princess Platinum gets for having a mining pit dug before even planting a flag.
And I believe the Clone High holiday episode didn't mention Christmas, as they had Snowflake Day instead (well, maybe Christmas was mentioned in passing). I like it all the same. Always good when they take an alternate world and continue to stick to it.

It's possible that the flag was more for the purposes of the play. Much like the Mane 6 representing the whole races (as I imagine the events in question happened with more than 6 ponies).
Another theory I've seen is that Celestia and Luna existed even then, just up in the heavens in more traditional deity fashion. They'll descend down to rule from the ground later on.

If that was the case, why was he unicorn clan controlling the sun and moon? Or were they just taking credit for something that was happening outside their control?

It's possible they were using their powers to call to Celestia/Luna, sort of like they were priests. One could also go seriously headcanon on this, and say that the unicorns at one time could raise the sun and moon by themselves (collectively, not individually, but still by themselves), until they did something that angered the gods (our little Alicorns), who stripped them of that power. It's tough to say in the context of the play, since it's hard to tell how much was factual and how much was "abbreviated" for the sake of the play.
They could be interpreted as goddesses in a GrecoRoman mythological sense, which were pretty much just top tier royalty with superpowers if you look at their role in the myths in a certain way.
The sisters are never presented as creators or even as particularly omniscient or omnipotent outside their literal spheres of influence. The ponies don't really seem to worship them as much as revere them and occasionally swear by them. (By Jove!)
Aphrodite arose full grown from sea foam surfing on a big seashell. Athena sprang out of a cleft in Zeus' forehead fully grown and in full battle gear. And those are tame compared to a lot of deities from other traditions.
I don't have a lot of trouble envisioning Celestia and Luna springing forth from that giant flaming pink heart as ponifications of the harmony of the three tribes. Just the same Discord could have coalesced out of the friction and strife that the ponies, being mortal, were still capable of.
Your mileage, of course, may vary, since this is all headcannon 'til the canon fires.

That is true but there is one more thing-
If unicorns can already use their magic to lower the sun and raise the moon...why have Celestia and Luna do it?
Or is it a future sign of great respect to entrust such an important taks upon such powerful beings.
And how could I forget my Greek mythology-afterall Kronos did eat all of his kids plus a rock then puked them all out

Well, this is mostly fanwonkery on my part, but I kind of gathered from the play that it took multiple unicorns to do it, instead of a single pony per celestial body. (I wouldn't go so far as to say the entire tribe of unicorns had to do cooperate to raise the sun and moon, but one could take it there if one's fanfiction demanded it.)
Taken the other way, it does diminish the "tyrant" aspect to Celestia & Luna a bit if they don't have a monopoly on whether the sun rises. Of course that doesn't totally account for the Nightmare Moon situation, but I'd probably take that as Celestia being the point-mare for dealing with her sister at the time of the first incident. Still, if both princesses flipped out and decided to go on strike, it's nice to know the unicorns could keep Equestria going.
Another thing, mythologically speaking the ponies in general seem to function as minor nature spirits, like dryads and sprites and such, in how they take a direct hoof in regulating the elements and nature.
YMMV as usual, tho.

Seems all very symbolic to me. Even the flag thingy. Like....the events the play covers have been so romanticisized and simplified over the years that it comes down to "blizzard spawned by hate causes unity among ponies".
The geopolitical situation they mention in itself seems like it was once far more complex than the simple story they performed. Twilight Sparkle probably has a whole section of the library devoted to that time period.

Well this covers a single period in pony history it seems.
And I doubt Celestia is covering anything up.
It's just that by it's very nature, the further back in history you look, the more simplified things appear. The more holes develop as minor details are lost to the memory.
A good example of the sort of thing I'm talking about: People today honestly believe the Renaissance thinkers thought the Earth was flat. In fact, even the scholarly Christians in the Vatican could not only tell you it was round, but tell you the actual size of the Earth as we know it today (a value known through trigonometric methods since around 200BC).

Thats true.
But if I have to look at it like a historian-Founding of Equestria===>Possibly Discord====>Celestia and Luna====>Nigntmare Moon====>Modern day Equestria.
Discord himself said he was a SPIRIT of Disharmony.
But what about Celestia-we know from a spoiler a 3rd alicorn princess is canon so-if they arent formed by peace and love and friendship (which I was really hoping wouldnt happen)
And they are not spirits and possibly gods...what are they?
(also I dont want this to see like I am either bitchin or trolling-I should say I rather much enjoy this discussion so far)

Hmmm...Aliens? Residents of Equestria pre-pony-migration? Maybe the Pony Migration Period intruded upon an ancient Alicorn society, and some of the Alicorns decided to lead the ponies, but the alicorn society was displaced/reduced/assimilated?
Sorta like how the Late Migration Period destroyed the Western Roman Empire, only with less violence and more ponies.

Not even close. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.p.....in/YouMeanXmas
That page even mentions a Frosty special with a Winter Festival and no Christmas in it.
