Johnathan Brisby - It's Not The Fear, It's The Regret
Quoted for language translation software for non-English speakers:
"I messed up today....
I was foolish in thinking my intelligence made me superior to him.
That made me overconfident and I became sloppy and didn't pay attention.
The physical pain is nothing compared to the hurt I feel
in knowing much much grief this will cause you.
It is not the fear of dying which is worst of all.
It is the regret.
The regret of not spending more time with you.
That I will miss watching our children grow up.
That I have left you alone in a dangerous world with no one to protect you.
Please forgive me, my dear.
Your love, Johnathan Brisby."
No, I'm not being emo -_-, just dramatic. ;) I just hope this wasn't too depressing for everyone. o.o;
What actually inspired this was me surprising a mouse in the field who was so busy eating he didn't even notice me standing over him. His inattention reminded me a possible cause of what got Johnathan killed.
This was the hardest picture I have ever had to create - 3 weeks of work, though if I wasn't so busy at my job I probably could have completed it a week ago. Dragon is such a hard cat to draw. -_- So many details that can throw him off-model. It took most of the time spent on this to get him right.
I purposely cut back on the shading to make it look more like the movie - tho I actually ended up put more shading in than should be there. ^_^ I think my attempt at forced perspective came out pretty good and solves the problem of Dragon being so large compared to Johnathan....
I'm jazzed about how the background turned out, though it is partially traced from the movie. The original filled up less than half the image, so I traced the outlines and remade it to proper size. It actually was a lot of fun completely deconstructing and reconstructing one of the NIMH backgrounds. Maybe I'll put a version of just the background that doesn't have the distance blurring in scraps at some point.
Anyway, again hope I haven't horrified too many with the graphic death of a beloved character. o.o;

Characters copyright Don Bluth and MGM Entertainment...I think.

I literally have watched it like 150+ times, mostly during the summer of 1986 when I finally got it on VHS. :) This *is* my all time favorite movie. :)
I actually did tone the gore down just a bit. Originally I was thinking of having blood dripping on the ground, but I was concerned it would detract from the emotional message of the pic. I didn't want it to be remembered just as a pic of Johnathan Brisby getting torn to shreds. :(
I do have a lot of compassion for the little fella, after all. :)
Yeah, her reading the passage made me realize no one in the fandom that I knew of had ever covered the details of his death. I figured this could be one possible scenario and was worth exploring.
Anyway, glad you really loved it! Thanks a bunch for the fav!

Found it! Very interesting. I'm not sure which fate is more gruesome...
Two interesting things: 1) The same backdrop was used (that kitchen scene is very useful. :) and 2) I pondered whether to put clothes on Johnathan. In the end I figured it made more sense for him to decide to look like an ordinary mouse in case he got caught. (Which he did....)

I'm really happy you like it! Ugh, you have no idea how many times over the past 3 weeks I felt overwhelmed by all the details. I began to wonder if I would ever get it done. (Especially since I was already spending 10+ hours a day just doing my regular programming job. :-P )
I love the play on perspective, it's is a truly wicked piece.
I always liked how little insight we got into Jonathan's death in the film, it was brought up a little bit at times but mostly kept aside for the viewers to imagine themselves. It gave his character a sense of mystery. Even so, I never did think much about it myself, I mean I've had my own thoughts and ideas about him and his fate but not as intimate as described here. It's just odd to really see him in his final moments like this... Actually it's heartbreaking.
I've seen some very detailed NIMH fanart before but it's not often you come across something that manages to touch you like this. I think you have created something really special here.
It's also my favorite film by the way. Thank you for making this.

Thank you very much for the thoughtful comment! =3 I'm really glad you like it.
I can't take full credit for the interesting perspective since I had to re-create the background from what was shown in the movie, and because the view was extended to almost a fish-eye lens, it was what I had to work with. XD But I do love how the perspective worked out since it allowed Johnathan to be reaching up with Dragon being able to be seen in a ominous nearly front-on view.
And yeah, the scene is rather dramatic, isn't it? But I always felt the film didn't really shy away from brutality, so if such a scene were in the film, I imagine it would be something like this... >.>;
But anyway, you're welcome. ^_^ I'm still planning on doing some more lighthearted fanart.... Eventually. X3

Point taken, though I think Bluth bought the film rights to O'Brien's characters when the movie was produced so many years ago. So my crediting was for these film versions of the characters. I added the question at the end since I really have no idea who has the current rights to the characters and these designs and how it relates to the book versions and whether rights have reverted, etc., etc.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed the artwork nonetheless!

A big congratulations! The work is incredible and I can’t imagine the time you must have spent on it! We can finally put a “picture” to his death. I find it a shame that they didn't include even a flashback to see how Jonathan got caught (even though Nicodemus writes it in his book. We only see Jonathan appear very little although "he is the hero who freed the rats of nimh. I would love to see more fan art like this. In any case, congratulations to you, your work is incredible! :o
