Really this is just a glorified sketch, but I really wanted to get this idea out of my head. I used a photo I took of a seagull pretty extensively. Please pretend that the blue-green blob at the bottom is ocean. (I know - it's totally half-assed...)
I'm not sure about her markings yet, but I figure she's definitely green and gold. I don't like the way her head turned out here, and you can't really see the two crests running down her neck at this angle. Check out my concept sketch to get a better idea of her delicate head and how the frills work:

This is a character that I've had in my head for, oh, probably a couple of years now. Her name is Kzia, (or K'zia, I can't decide about the apostrophe), and she is a species of dragon that developed more or less in isolation on a small archpelago of islands. (Her name would mean "Sea Breeze" if it were loosely translated.) As such, she's designed off of sea birds, specifically gulls. She does have six limbs, though it probably would make more sense biologically to only have four. I just like six-limbed dragons.
These dragons aren't very big; maybe about 3-4 feet tall. They'd eat a lot of fish, but they'd also hunt other island creatures. They live in small family groups.
I'm quite attached to Kzia's story, though I haven't written much of it yet. Basically she gets driven off her island by an invasive species and ends up flying across a wide expanse of ocean to a continent where she is the only one of her species. Poor critter.
I think this is the most beautiful dragon design I have come up with so far.
