
I thought for sure I posted this... it's one of my favorite photos I've ever taken! White-eyed mutation of p. americana cockroach. White-eyed American cockroaches are not genetically modified, but are a natural mutation. They were discovered in the bottom of a mineshaft in the 40's, making up about 5% of the population in the one cave in which they are found.

They're in different orders, and american roaches tend to prefer more tropical areas as compared to dark caves, but I guess there are always exceptions. I believe the mineshaft they came out of was in Africa, but I'm not entirely sure. So it was probably at least quite warm in whatever cave they're from.
