This is a gift commission drawn by
kanthara from my wonderful and loving mate
dimby on my 29th birthday. You have to know the context to understand the meaning of this gift. This actually happened. Dimby arranged everything you see in the picture exactly as shown: the laptop, gift on the table, remotes, the white blanket, popcorn, he even had me pick out a wine earlier in the day. He covertly took photographs of my apartment for Kanthara to use in the commission so that everything was identical: the pictures, the table, the TV, the speakers, the lamp, even the pattern on the sofa. This took weeks of preparation in advance.
On the actual day of my designated birthday celebration, Dimby prepared a secret billing of events: intimacy, gifts, brunch, hiking, wine tasting, Japanese dinner with sushi, ice cream shop and ice skating--all secret. I never knew what would happen next. Then the pièce de résistance: he figured out in advance which Gargoyles episode we were due to watch next, picked a memorable quote from the episode, had Kanthara put it in the commission, paused at that exact moment, kissed me and took a picture. He then gave me the wrapped gift, which said “This is a magical printer. It only works once for a single picture.”
It is, simply, the best gift I’ve ever received. I already called it at the time: it’s the best gift I’m ever going to receive and I’m OK with that. Dimby is the love of my life and the person I’m going to spend the rest of my days with. This magical picture took place the day before we moved my apartment contents into storage in preparation for my new apartment next month. I was bad-mouthing my old place as dark and dingy but Dimby saw more: a home integral to our falling in love. It’s a commemoration to that part of our lives and it floors me now when I look at it. At the time I opened the gift however, I was a stunned and dumbstruck. I could do little more than squeak and point out little details in the picture for a good half hour.
Thank you to
kanthara for your grace and patience through this process.
I love you, Dimby. There was simply no better way to close chapter 1 of our lives and begin a new adventure together, hand in hand, side by side, forever. *kiss*
