Have you noticed there's no Western-style alphabet used in Equestria? They use some other made-up style of characters in the written language shown on-screen.

Actually there are a few instances of English used on-screen. "Welcome Princess Celest" in Swarm of the Century, "Start" and "Ink" in Cutie Mark Chronicles, "VIP" in Best Night Ever.

This season, though, it's been mostly shapes that *almost* look like letters:

SIDE NOTE:

Look at Bloom's mouth in the SIHOVI.jpg image. Note how her upper lip follows the curve of her muzzle.

On the "new" pony grins -- the ones that look so weird -- the upper lip is flat, which makes it look like a human mouth pasted on a pony face.

The odd new grins, they're not unattractive, just odd. They chose an appealing design over logical anatomy. Anime also does cartoony stuff like that all the time, like wide open mouths that cause chins to totally disappear, which carries the same weird vibe.
