My cats became extremely excited when I pulled this tail out of the closet and wagged it around in a disembodied manner. They thought: A HAIRY SNAKE! WHAT NEXT??? The by-far-the-quieter of the two cats SEIZED the tail in her fangs and STREAKED down the hall. I've never seen her do anything like it.

Yep, one year I dressed as Batanen from Hyperpolice at Project A-Kon. It was amazing how people would go so nuts over one piece of costume.
Late Saturday afternoon (back in 2001) I encountered a guy in the dealers' room in a raccoon fursuit...I wagged my semirigid tail and we embraced like old friends, in a moment of hamming it up. Never saw his face (6'+, I suppose it was a him)
